The Supreme Court of the State of Washington has just approved several new ways for attorneys to become licensed bypassing the bar exam — adding momentum to the alternative licensure movement.
Washington’s high court approved two new licensing pathways for law school graduates. One option is a new apprenticeship program for law school graduates who would work under the supervision of an experienced lawyer for six months then submit a portfolio of work for evaluation.
A separate option would allow law students to complete 12 credits of skills coursework and 500 hours of hands-on legal work ..read more

The National Conference of Bar Examiners has announced that ExamSoft, the platform most states use for the current bar exam, will be replaced with different testing software for the NextGen bar exam.
The bar examiners’ switch to Surpass Assessment software comes after a number of technology issues with ExamSoft. The company paid $2.1 million in 2015 to settle a lawsuit brought by bar exam takers who could not upload their test answers.

A 17-year-old has now become the youngest person ever to pass the California Bar Examination.
Law clerk Peter Park passed the exam on his very first attempt. He took the test back in July and received his results last month.
On December 5th, he was sworn-in as one of California’s youngest practicing attorneys.

A Canadian court has just ruled that the lawyers and paralegals accused of cheating on the bar exam last year must have their punishments reduced.
The Ontario Divisional Court’s ruling wiped away most of the sanctions against the accused candidates because they did not receive a fair hearing. “The substantial and wide-ranging consequences suffered by the Applicants weigh in favour of a high level of procedural fairness,” the three-judge panel wrote.
