There you go! Once you disclosed your interest in skis or any other sport gear on the internet, your mailbox is flooded with ‘pre-season deal’ reminders. The latest boots, and the new ski models which you apparently need to ski better. I think what these commercials don’t tell you is the fact that most of the time there have been only little design changes. Ski technology isn’t newly invented again every year! Skis and boots, or clothing are often identically reproduced, but now in the latest trendy, hip colors. Another marketing strategy is to point out the superior quality and longevity of t ..read more

No common sense……no skiing!   We are all craving to indulge in our favorite sport again soon…..skiing! Though the question which remains is…..will we be able to do so? So many people work in the winter sport industry and you can imagine that the 3 Valleys and all ski resorts are doing their absolute best to make it happen. They installed everything to live up to the hygiene concepts necessary and introduced numerous guidelines to make sure that skiers can move safely through ski lifts and use public transport. If you look around yourself in our daily life, public transport and getting aro ..read more

A review……an outlook!

A review…and an OUTLOOK! There was hope that life would sooner or later return to normal after an abrupt halt of the winter season 19/20 due to the unprecedented threat of a new virus, which started to spread around the world and some ski resorts. Though there had not been any covid-19 outbreaks in the French Alps at the time, it was inevitable that precautions had to be taken to prevent this, and protect the people! All in all the severity of the whole thing grew more apparent and confronted us with changes in our lives which had the potential to let people despair. Not only did it have an im ..read more

The downfall of skiing!
Ski Thomas

`Which Skills?´ or the downfall of skiing! I think winter sport amateurs believe that green or blue runs are safe and not dangerous. But skiing has reached a point where this is not entirely true anymore. If you place yourself anywhere on a busy red, blue or green run you’re definitely in harm’s way and you risk to be hit at any moment by one of the countless people who have taken the back seat on their skis! And at the risk of offending some of you, it’s safe to say that hardly anyone of them is able to stop in time, or alter their trajectory if needed. And if this eventually results in the i ..read more

ETERNAL ICE?

Eternal ice? ……….observations of a bystander. Around this time in summer, about 24 years ago, `Glacier du Borgne’ high up in the Méribel valley looked so inviting to me that I stuffed my telemark boots into a rucksack, tied the teles to my MTB and cycled up. After hiking the last half kilometer I hit snow just below `Petit Valdez’, a couloir some of you might know. Later on I was doing nice free-heel turns in half a foot of summer powder. Glacier du Borgne hasn’t looked like that during summer since. On the contrary, this summer of 2019 there is hardly any ice left! Pretty soon `Glacier du Bor ..read more

Learn the Technique!!!

Learn the technique!!! This comment from a true ski enthusiast from my hometown in the German `Mittelgebirge` (Middle Mountain’s) influenced my whole life as a skier. Hungry and keen to start the new season we were often seen when training hard to go as fit as possible into the winter. I remember one of our heroes saying when watching us: `Guys, concentrate on your technique, your fitness comes through skiing ‘! A true remark I always kept in mind! No matter how many kilometers you clocked on the MTB during summer, your ski legs shaped up while skiing! Much has  changed since my early ski ..read more

Only weeks away from the first ski turns many skiers think about their equipment…. `Skis are tuned and waxed. Clothing, googles, gloves all good. But is there anything else I can improve to make me ski better? ´ Yes, what about the most important part of your `SKIING´? Your ski boots, your feet and how you feel your skis! A custom made, heat molded INSOLE will improve the performance of your existing boot! And if you your ski boots are still laced there might be time for a change too! As a longtime ski instructor and freeride guide, I come across many skiers who struggle to control and im ..read more

EXPECTING SNOW….
Ski Thomas

Expecting lots of snow! That is what we are craving when we think about the next winter. We tend to believe that winter happiness and our skiing satisfaction depends entirely on the amount of snow we’ll get. As a consequence, prior to each winter, we are desperately looking for signs that support the prophecies of abundant snow falls to come. The displayed pic was posted by the ÖAV (Austrian Alpine Association) on August 28, 2018. It shows one of the first substantial snowfalls in the 2nd half of 2018. An incredible 50cm of fresh at 2000m altitude somewhere in the ` Hohe Tauern´ range! Wow! ÖA ..read more

You don’t know what you are missing if you haven’t spent time in Meribel and the 3 VALLEYS during summer! In times where the typical holiday destinations are becoming increasingly crowded. When you can only dream of deserted beaches or imagine them. And when visiting one of the historic European cities is like swimming in a sea of bodies while getting hit by selfie-sticks……you might want to consider changing your habits and spend your precious holidays away from the bustle and hustle of the masses. During summer, Meribel doesn’t compare to the winter time at all. There are fewer people. There ..read more
