For the love of horror

As well as being an amazing convention in Manchester (tickets are already on sale for next October, I’ll be there!) the phrase ‘for the love of horror’ is applicable to what I do and why I do it. When I started this blog way back in 2019, it was a way to put myself out there and meet people. Offering to review books, interviewing people from the mainly indie book community and trying to boost projects whilst also trying to become part of the horror community. I was pretty good at keeping up the flow of posts for a while and met some awesome people along the way. Blogging is most definitely tim ..read more

I hate clowns. They terrify me. I don’t have a real life child trauma to attribute it to thank god but I did watch a horrific film far too young than scared and scarred me for life. I’m not going to talk about the film because I have since learned that the director is a piece of shit. And that is that, It took me years to watch It and although I have also seen the new ones, it’s only the fact I love King’s storytelling that got me through it. A few years ago, there were a couple of films that appeared on Netflix with similar names. Terrified which is a scary as fuck supernatural Spanish movie ..read more

I love a good show that I can sink my teeth into and that gets the grey matter working overtime. Mare of Easttown has done just that. My brain is fried, I have so many wild thoughts and theories ranging from the predictable to the preposterous. As we head to the finale, there are so many key questions still to be resolved. Who killed Erin? I’m still not 100% sure. I’ll save this for my prediction round-table. Who is DJs father? I think it could be one of the Rosses OR Father Dan but I’m going with Kevin What is on the photo? Kevin with Erin Are the cases actually connected? Yes as Eri ..read more

Flame Tree Press Blog Tour – MESTIZA BLOOD by V. Castro

There is a certain art to the telling of a short story. It still needs all the elements included in longer work. It still needs a beginning, middle, a satisfying ending. A developed setting, interesting characters. But in far less words. When done well, they are probably my favorite format to read, a succinct narrative in a perfect package. You can pick up the book and read one with your morning cuppa, another later with coffee and one before bed. If you can stop there. And of course, I had no doubt at all the V. Castro would be able to do this in spades. Mestiza Blood is awesome. 14 wonderfu ..read more

1. The Nightmare Tree is a collection of short stories. Is there an overarching theme or are they all standalone? The stories in the collection are standalone with a mix of different styles, with the title story being a novella length piece.  They all feature the people of my fictional towns of Fife, Scotland (Pitlair, Kirkness, Balekerin, Drumnagoil). Poverty and parenthood tend to be themes that come up a lot in my works, and there are a few stories in the Nightmare Tree that focus on that. 2. I see one is called In a Jar of Spiders *shudders*. Why? Why spiders? A lot of my stories mig ..read more
