By Charlie Dunne Heuer Autavia Reference 3646 “First Execution” Unpolished One of the most attractive Autavias is the First Execution Autavia reference 364 which features “Big Subs” (or “Big Eyes”) from the early 60s. These early Autavias are considered “Holy Grail” pieces amongst the Heuer collecting community. The dial has a very beautiful patina throughout the hour markers with slight fading on the exterior of the 12 and 6 numerals. Often, these early Autavias get damaged within the white registers, however, this example has remained very clean. The two-register 3646 features a more symmet ..read more

By Charlie Dunne Rolex Big Daytona Reference 6239 w/ Letter of Provenance The Rolex Daytona reference 6239 is the original and earliest reference of the Daytona. This example features a “Big Daytona” logo where DAYTONA is large and underneath COSMOGRAPH on the dial. I really love the way the ROLEX / COSMOGRAPH / DAYTONA text lines up in descending order like a pyramid in shape. This example also has the original early “300” Mark 2 reference 6239 bezel, which differs from later examples by having 300 on the tachymeter bezel and “UNITS PER HOUR” between 12 and 2 o’clock, whereas later bezels ha ..read more

What is a "Matte" Dial?
Wind Vintage Blog
by charlie dunne
3w ago
By Charlie Dunne The term “Matte” dial refers to Rolex dials produced post-1966 that are easily identifiable from the gradient dial surface with stamped printing. While many manufacturers used matte dials, more often the discussion centers around models produced by Rolex. The base of these dials is made of a metal plate generally made of brass. These would often be layered with a black paint (however there are variants within Rolex and other manufacturers that use whites and other base colors). Oftentimes for Rolex sports models, white paint for letters and hour markers would then be applied b ..read more

By Charlie Dunne Audemars Piguet Reference 5072ST The time-only vintage Audemars Piguet watches with VZSS movements based upon a Valjoux ebauche are some of the most beautiful and desirable time-only watches ever made. Among those models, the 5072 is arguably the most desirable because of the large size and water-resistant case with antimagnetic dust cover. For the reference 5072s, most are in yellow gold (BA) and a few are in rose gold, but only a mythical few are known in steel (ST). In fact, far fewer than 10 are known to the market in steel. This is the third one I have owned and I can sa ..read more

What is an "Exclamation" Dial?
Wind Vintage Blog
by charlie dunne
1M ago
By Charlie Dunne There is an abundance of terminology when it comes to vintage Rolex watches. An “exclamation” dial is quite simple. The term derives from the luminous plot, and rectangular luminous plot on vintage Rolex sports models (except in the case of Explorer reference 1016s, it features a dot below the 6). The rectangle plus dot resembles an exclamation point. “Exclamation” dials can be seen in models from circa 1962 and are believed to be an indicator for a lower level of radium / radiation for the hands and dial. Just after these “exclamation, we see “underline” dials from circa 63-6 ..read more

By Charlie Dunne Rolex Paul Newman Daytona Reference 6239 Unpolished This is a rare Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Reference 6239 with a spectacular white dial. The first “Paul Newman” exotic dials we see on the Daytona reference 6239 are in the 1.6M range. From my experience, those are all black. Starting at the 1.7M serial range, we see white-dial “Paul Newmans” like the one Paul himself wore which was slightly later 2.005M serial that went for $17.8M at auction in October 2017. Overall, you could dedicate years looking for a beautiful early “Paul Newman'“ dial like the present example. It is ..read more

Collector's Guide: What To Know About The Rolex Submariner Reference 5512

By Charlie Dunne If you were to tell me five years ago that my favorite watch to wear would be a vintage Rolex Submariner I would have laughed! “That is way too obvious of a watch!” would have likely been my response. Yet from late 2023 to now in 2024, I fell in love with the simple, no-date Submariner. Eric Wind and I have spent countless hours regaling others on the joys of owning and wearing vintage Rolex watches. There is no other product like them on the planet, and rather than owning something unique or rare, I find this somewhat obvious watch to be the most compelling on the wrist for ..read more
