Anyone else get lucky and draw a bull tag for unit 16A this year? Or has anyone else hunted it in the past? Would welcome any advice or someone willing to share info about the unit. I'm debating whether to hire a guide or if a couple scouting trips is enough to give myself a good chance at killing a bull.  ..read more

Here’s your lucky day wanna see monster bulls in a unit everyone calls a hard hunt. Want to see them off the highway? Instructions, waypoint, and areas of interest below. Most honest piece of honey hole elk country you’ll read today.   The bull pictured, no joke was killed right by the highway. Everyday countless people drive by and think nothing of it. Right off highway 180w and the mangas road is where you’ll find these beasts. They spend a lot of time in ..read more

To my surprise I drew my second choice which is a Late Archery bull tag in unit 22S. I plan on scouting HARD and learn the unit very well with a scouting trip planned in 2 weeks....After reading some different things some people say that elk "winter" in the south and spend the the summer in the north out of the unit boundary? Any information or tips on the unit and or late archery hunt would help, thanks ..read more

Wife and I got lucky on our "swing for the fences" first choice (thinking we would draw late rifle cow on 5 points) and drew 22S early muzzy bull.  No complaints here and looking forward to it, but I have spent little time in 22.  More time in 23 chasing javelina.  This will be her intro into all things elk, and really big game hunting in general for all practical purposes.  Planning for a base camp scenario nightly at the truck so I don't ruin her from the beginning.  Now I'm thinking wall tent w/ stove, cots, etc.  (I don't have that stuff yet ..read more

Pagosa Springs GMU 77,771 and 78

Anyone here have interest in partnering on a hunt around Pagosa Springs (GMU 77,771,78)?  I did this 2 years ago and got a small 4x4 bull by myself.  The hike out for me was 2.5 miles round trip 5 times (12.5 miles total) and it kind of wiped me out.  Probably won't apply unless I could partner up with someone.  According to a new feature in OnX maps, Non-residents may get drawn with a very low amount of points.  Reply back or direct message if you're interested in discussing.  Draw is open now and you have to submit by April 2nd.  Results posted May 28-31 ..read more

New Archery Equipment for the '24 elk hunt

Anyone using new equipment for this years elk hunt?  After a month of looking (dating back to well before the draw) I decided on a Lift 33 & am setting it up.  While I've done well with my 'old' Apex in the past, it was time for an upgrade.  I will say the recoil is essentially non-existent when shooting it as Mathews has outdone itself with this one.  The one thing I'm still deciding on however is a rear-facing stabilizer to help balance it (with a quiver of arrows).  Is there much of a performance difference that should be considered other than weight & ..read more
