Overlanding Finland – Nordkapp to Helsinki
Tucks' Truck

The only route from Nordkapp is south, so that’s the way we’ll go. As we had driven north up through Norway and Sweden, why not drive south overlanding Finland all the way down to Helsinki? Sounds like a plan. On the way we did some husky-sledding, tried a ‘new’ type of skiing, hunted for gas, watched skate-racing, and drove Cuthbert over the sea!    Overlanding Finland – Winter Wonderland Heading south from Nordkapp the scenery is initially a barren, treeless, open tundra, wind-swept white as far as you can see (which actually isn’t very far when the wind picks-up the surface ice pa ..read more

Arctic Winter: Destination Nordkapp
Tucks' Truck

We’re in the Norwegian Arctic. We’ve just crossed the Polar Circle heading north to destination Nordkapp … the furthest north we can drive in the world. In winter. On the plus side: the snow and the low winter light makes it particularly spectacular, no summer crowds, and no midges!! On the down side: it’s chilly, driving is a bit tricky, it’s chilly, many of the tourism facilities are closed, and it’s chilly. So is a winter drive to Nordkapp worth it? And did we mention it’s chilly? Lofoten Winter Lofoten is a group of islands within the Arctic Circle. It’s not hard to see why it’s one o ..read more

Scandi-Overlanding in Arctic Winter

Overlanding to the Arctic Circle is a bit cool. But it’s even cooler if you go in winter. We did it in North America twice, but both times in summer. Now we’re heading to the European Arctic, in winter. Why? Because it’s the most northerly point you can drive to in the world. And because we can. Or at least we think we can. We won’t find out unless we try. We don’t have a plan yet – we can do that on the way – but we do at least know that it’s nippy up there in February, so we’ll be taking a coat and a woolly hat. After touring Ireland over the autumn and spending our first Christmas in 20 ye ..read more

10 Years Overlanding !!

Wow!!! How the bejeezus did we get here???? 10 years overlanding!!! Setting off Had you just happened to bump into us back in February 2014, you’d have met two newbie overlanders in a brand new, super-shiny Cuthbert expedition truck, excited to be setting off to drive the world. We had absolutely no idea how long we’d last. All we knew is that Africa was to be our first destination. But had you suggested to us that ten years later we might still be going, in the same lovely Cuthbert camper-truck… we might have had you certified. But here we are. Sat in Cuthbert in beautiful, wintery Stockholm ..read more

We’re overlanding Ireland, exploring the Emerald Isle! Yes, that’s quite a hop since you last heard from us in Canada! Back in June we shipped Cuthbert back to UK after almost 8 years overlanding the whole of The Americas. Since then we’ve been busy spending quality time with family in England and touring around wonderful Ireland. So it’s about time we did a blog to bring you good people up to date, bringing you all the hot-scoop on our travels over the summer. Big Shipping and Family Time Soooo…. picking-up where you last found us, we were putting Cuthbert on a ship in Nova Scotia, Canada and ..read more

Outer Banks to Outbound
Tucks' Truck

What’s the point in planning if plans rarely work out, eh? There we were… taking a leisurely pootle towards the Outer Banks islands, ‘planning’ a summer overlanding the east-coast cities of DC, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and up the north-east coast. Then, it turned out, we needed to pick up the pace a bit, making a dash to Nova Scotia to ship out… pronto. Outer Banks The Outer Banks Islands are so small, they disappear into the coastline on most maps. But zoom in on North Carolina and you’ll see a string of tiny islands running down the coast. They’re little more than sandbanks and are mos ..read more

Great American Parkways

The route east out of Texas leads us through a whole load of states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and finally to the North Carolina coast. On the way we investigate Bonnie and Clyde, we test some great American Parkways, we see a Titanic attraction, and we have a tech snag with Cuthbert… Bonnie & Clyde Land First stop, just over the Texas border is a lovely spot on an Arkansas bayou. Beautiful, peaceful, lots of birds, wildlife and best of all… free to camp! What’s not to like, eh? We stayed a few days going for walks around the nature and ignoring the occasional bl ..read more

Texas: Rocket Time
Tucks' Truck

It’s always good to return to Texas. After a 3,000km dash from central Guatemala, through the whole length of Mexico in just four days, we’re chuffed to be welcomed by friendly US border guys into Texas.  Not in our 9+ years of overlanding have we ever travelled so fast!! The real reason we dashed here at warp-factor-sneeze was for a bit of Texas Rocket Time… the imminent launch of Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship rocket. Exciting, eh? Then we enjoyed catching up with some lovely friends here, and we took a trip to Paris! Rocket Time First, for those uninitiated to the world of rocketry, it’s ..read more

Semana Santa is the Easter week celebration. It’s a biiiiig thing here in Antigua, Guatemala. Every year, over a million people descend on this very cool, historic town at the foot of Volcan de Agua to see the Semana Santa processions at Antigua Easter. So what’s our outsiders’ insight into the world’s largest Easter celebrations? And how do we end up doing a post-Easter overlanding rocket-blast all the way north through Guatemala, through Mexico, to Texas? Easter Parades First… confession time… we not really religious. Generally, we don’t partake in Easter celebrations (other than the gluteno ..read more

Guatemala – Hidden Gems
Tucks' Truck

Hey Guatemala… we’re back! Last time in 2018 we saw all the big attractions… Antigua, Atitlan, Semuc Champey, Tikal… yardy, yardy, yardy. This time we thought we’d check out a few hidden gems of Guatemala. These are some very cool-looking places in the far corner of Huehuetenango province. They’re more remote, less ‘international tourism’ and much harder to get to than the usual Top-Ticks. We found that sometimes they’re gems, sometimes they’re not. But first we had to do the border stuff… Borderline TIP First mission at the Mex/Guat border was to cancel Cuthbert’s Mexican Temporary Impor ..read more
