Fenchol, a natural compound abundant in some plants including basil, can help protect the brain against Alzheimer’s disease pathology, a preclinical study led by University of South Florida Health (USF Health) researchers suggests. The new study published Oct. 5 in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, discovered a sensing mechanism associated with the gut microbiome that explains how fenchol reduces neurotoxicity in the Alzheimer’s brain. Emerging evidence indicates that short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)– metabolites produced by beneficial gut bacteria and the primary source of nutrition for ce ..read more

Body muscle gain and markers of cardiovascular disease susceptibility in young adulthood

A new study showed that muscle strengthening, as indicated by grip strength gain, was weakly associated with lower atherogenic trait levels in young adulthood, at a smaller magnitude than unfavourable associations of fat mass gain. Associations of muscle mass gain with such traits appear to be smaller and limited to gains occurring in adolescence. These results suggest that body muscle is less robustly associated with markers of CVD susceptibility than body fat and may therefore be a lower-priority intervention target. Obesity prevalence has increased dramatically over the past 40 years. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries (GBD 2015 Obesity Collaborators et al., 2017). Increasing physical activity reduces the risk of death more effectively than losing weight. Hence - the conclusion: the fight against overweight and obesity has the wrong goal - you need not to count the kilograms, but to focus on training. "Regular physical activity improves cardiometabolic health better than weight loss programs." Read more cell.com #physicalactivity #exercise #cardiomatabolichealth ..read more

A pilot clinical trial (NCT04568057) conducted on the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM-T) claims it may provide a promising new approach to improve memory function in healthy, middle-aged people with normal intellectual function for their age. The study, conducted by a team led by Paul Chazot, PhD, associate professor, Durham University, and Gordon Dougal, MB ChB, at Maculume Ltd., subjected 27 participants to near-infrared light (NIR) at 1068 nm wavelength twice daily using an air-cooled LED helmet that participants can wear on their own. The results showed significant improvement ..read more
