What Happens when..... "I've Fallen and Can't Get Up"? (Or Down?)

I think most of us have hunted from trees at some point in our lives. Ladders, saddles, climbers, hang sets...or just on a sturdy limb provides ample opportunities to fall. Does anyone ever REALLY think about what's going to happen after you hit the abrupt end of the harness tether...if your lucky enough to be wearing one when it happens? They say suspension trauma sets in shortly after you fall and death can be imminent. I never gave it too much thought if I fall with a hang set as at... What Happens when..... Anyone finding sheds yet in southwest part of the state? As of last weekend only a couple spikes had dropped their horns. My cell camera plans expired so I don’t know what’s happening with them since last Thursday night. I’m hoping to find atleast 1 or 2 sheds this spring ..read more

The End To Baiting in MS?

There was an interesting article in the Clarion Ledger today. A Commissioner after hearing the news of 6 more CWD added counties this year AND a 50% increase in the positive test overall across the state, asked in a gentle way to a member of the Agency...do we need baiting? The MDWFP said (again summarizing) maybe not. Another Commissioner expressed his concern over baiting as well. I'm not sure if baiting is mandated by statute or perhaps regulation. Either way, a dawn of change may be... The End To Baiting in MS ..read more

The fluorescent pink bill (HB-526) has passed out of the House with an overwhelming margin. It now heads to the Senate Wildlife Committee where it will be further reviewed. Currently, 11 states of the 44 states (that require general usage of a safety color garment for use in the gun season) allow an optional fluorescent color to be used other than orange....or about 25% of the states. Pink is at least as visible as a safety color as fluorescent orange as determined by the University of... House Passes Fluorescent Pink Optional Safety Color ..read more

Season Summary and Last Day Success

2023/2024 deer season has been one of my favorites. I was fortunate enough to have the time to hunt several WMA’s, national forests, coastal preserves, and refuges. I haven’t sat down and thought about how many hunt days I actually put in this season, but it was a lot. The season started with the archery opener at Charles Ray Nix WMA where I put an arrow through a doe while slowly walking down a creek that still had water. 90-degree weather, super dry conditions, and a ridiculous pack out... How Many Folks Can Completely Cape?

It's kind of gotten slow here so I thought of a subject that (maybe) everyone can have some interest in.... With most states now requiring boneless meat and the skull removed/treated (boiled in most cases) for interstate transport on all cervids, how many of you feel proficient at completely & fully caping out an animal for interstate transport? I assume by the numbers of hunters that travel to other states to hunt on DYI hunts... that it must be very high. Also, for DYI hunts, you often... How Many Folks Can Completely Cape ..read more

I am seriously thinking about getting a suppressor this year. I have been doing some reading and have listened to a podcast here and there but am far from knowledgeable on the devices. Most likely I am thinking of buying a 308 with a threaded barrel instead of tapping one of my guns. Are there any yall know that I should look towards or stay away from ..read more

HB-526 (Updated) (Fluorescent Pink)

I asked what people thought back in 2017 about having pink as an alternative to blaze orange for a gun season requirement. It was largely favorable. Currently 10 states allow alternatives to blaze orange for safety purposes in the gun seasons (Nine of those states allow pink and one fluorescent green-Arkansas) HB944 has been introduced as the first 'Pink' hunting bill in this state .Louisiana has allowed it for quite a few years now. A study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison showed... HB-526 (Updated) (Fluorescent Pink ..read more

Smith county giant??

What’s the deal with that deer? Does anyone believe a deer that size just pops up in that area that has never produced deer like that? The claim is they have killed numerous deer like that in the last 10-12 years. Did he unlock a secret nobody in Ms knows or what? A 28in wide 30in main beam deer just doesn’t seem natural to that area with cutovers and pines. One deer I could maybe understand but to kill several deer over 200in smith county is just crazy ..read more
