Learning to Learn: My child is smarter than me

I tried to play a game on the table with my son. The task was nearly impossible as I lack the hand-eye coordination and situational awareness to manage the seemingly thousands of things happening simultaneously. After watching me embarrass myself a couple of times, he yanked the tablet from my hands and proceeded to zoom through the level one while probably thinking “wow, the old man is really slow!”. As I was watching him, it struck me how we often claim that children on the spectrum cannot attend to tasks or lack patience and focus to sit through a class. Some questions then popped in my hea ..read more

Family Means Well

When we first told our wider family and friends that our son is on Autism spectrum, reactions varied from empathy to indifference. I have to say that neither reaction bothered me but it made me realize that while they did not know what it really meant, they just wanted us to be happy. Which means they said a lot of clumsy things that meant well but are borderline offense. Here, I want to share to top five things that fall under “I know you are trying and I appreciate it but say this instead”. Again this is just my perspective. Here we go:  1. “He must be a genius”: While I hope so and I ..read more

We Only Have Twenty Minutes

We like to go out to eat and have fun. When our son was first diagnosed, we read a lot. Faby read a lot of blogs and testimonials while I favored obscure scientific literature that I can summarize to: “each child is unique; we don’t really know much but hey this method seems to have worked for someone at some point”. The blogs and testimonials pretty much said the same thing. There is no magical, quick-fix formula to raising a child and there absolutely no blueprint on raising one who is on the spectrum. After much belly aching, we had a late-night conversation and decided that we would live o ..read more

Something funny happens to my son. There is a magical thinking out there that a child who is seen as “limited” in some respects is also supposed to be perfect in all others. Somehow, the expectation that he can do anything is very low while the bit he is expected to do is supposed to be done perfectly the first time and every time thereafter. This magical thinking is perfectly illustrated in the movie “Rain Man” so much so that people think our son is some card counting math genius. Our son cannot have a bad day, be upset, frustrated, or simply tired. He is supposed to perform as soon as he hi ..read more

Hi, my name is Faby and I am the founder and president of Autism Bird. Daily, I wear multiple hats but the one I am the proudest of is being the mother to an amazing little boy on the autism spectrum. He was diagnosed at age 2 and is now a big, smart, and funny 6-year-old. If you are a parent like me, and you are at the beginning of your parenting journey, it’s OK to be overwhelmed. I didn’t know what autism was when we received the diagnosis and I know It can be very challenging at times balancing sleep, feeding, behaviors, and therapies. However, it is important to remain hopeful and positiv ..read more

Hi, my name is Saikou. I am very proud to be the father of a 6-year-old boy young boy who is also on the autism spectrum. I did not know much about Autism at the time of the diagnosis and had to scramble to get educated. I learned a lot about schooling, insurances, Medicaid, and attendants and tried to map out a future for him just like we had planned before he was born. As a father, I believe that it is my responsibility to make sure that my son succeeds and fails on his merit. I resolve not to accept the limitations created by the current environment and fight to ensure that he has an equal ..read more
