Blog Day 92
Albany Harbour
Hi All
OMG, I have just had the most intense and exciting 48 hours and there is so much to share with you all. Day 91 was going to be my last full day at sea, and I still had over 150 nm left to sail in the morning. The winds were going to make me work for every mile, so I was sailing with 2 reefs in the mainsail and the no 2 jib out. The winds were due to increase a little overnight before easing the next day and backing from the WNW to the NW which would give me just enough angle to ease sails and start aiming for the finish line. &nb ..read more

Hi all,
I was so very excited about the possibility of finishing the record tomorrow afternoon however the weather conditions last night and tonight have blasted that idea right out of the water. Last night there was an occluded front and then a cold front, so the conditions were a complete bag of mixed winds and wind directions keeping me on my toes all night. After finishing the blog, I went on deck to take a look at things, and we were drifting in 10 knots of wind ..read more

Hi All,
I honestly can’t believe that I have now spent 90 days at sea solo and seen only two ships... It sometimes feels like I have been at sea for years and other days it feels like I only just began with this adventure. This is the longest stretch of time I have ever spent at sea or alone, and I am quite happy with how well I have managed and while it hasn't been all sunshine and roses the good moments have definitely outweighed the bad.
I didn't manage that much sleep again last night, main ..read more

Hi All,
I think the fact that in a few short days I will be arriving on dry land again has left me restless while I try to sleep. I went to bed by 3am but I spent until 8am tossing and turning and unable to fall asleep. The longer I laid there the harder sleep became. I was up and checking on the boat at 8am and it wasn't until after this that I was finally able to fall asleep. Throughout the night the winds have been holding from the NNE to the N so I was able to make a course ..read more

Hi all,
Last night after finishing the blog I was a little bit wired and so it took me a while to fall to sleep. I think I ended up getting to bed around 4am despite trying for earlier. This whole re-setting the body clock thing really is not working out so well at the moment... The winds were still holding around 20 knots but were expected to ease to almost nothing over the morning, so I set my alarms to wake up more than normal to try to catch the shift. I was als ..read more

Hi All,
Last night after sending the blog home I did go on deck and change the sails. The winds had dropped out from 27 knots to less than 20 knots, so I ended up shaking out the reefs in the mainsail from the third reef to the first reef. There was still another burst of wind due, so I didn't want to go all the way to the full mainsail. I also unfurled the rest of the no 2 jib out so that the whole of the sail was in use. The winds had also gone back to the north and I was get ..read more

Hi all,
Well, over the early hours of this morning the winds started to build at 2am so I went on deck and put the first reef in the mainsail. I was still sailing with the full No 2 jib out and making some great speeds. I finally went to bed at 4am before waking up at 1100 to do the micro plastic sample change. I can’t say that I managed much sleep as we were sailing in 25-30 knots of wind, up wind and my bunk was on the high side on port. I have 4 p ..read more

Hi All,
Last night I managed to get to bed a few hours earlier than yesterday, at 4am instead of sunrise, but it is a start. While I spent a solid chunk of time in bed, I didn't get any quality sleep. I am starting to feel a little anxious about it all. It has really been a long old run getting to this point and now within a few days I will be leaving the race track and sailing north for Albany. It’s a lot to take in. The more excited I get the more worried I get, that something wi ..read more

Hi All,
Last night was a beautiful night with a full moon shining lots of light around. The sky was partially covered with clouds and there was only a small amount of swell around. The winds were blowing in at a stable 20 knots for most of the night and we were able to hold a beam reach or just forward for the night as well. I had changed over from the No 1 Jib to the No 2 Jib, but I had left the whole of the mainsail up. I am pushing now, trying to make up for the time ..read more

Hi all,
Well its getting real and exciting out here as I just changed over to my second last time zone, only one more hour to go before reaching Albany time, so that to me is a real marker of time passing. Last night the winds remained light and were blowing in at 2-4 knots for most of the night, for a short time they filled in to 6-8 knots before dropping back out at sunrise, so it has been a really long slow day and there was very little to be done about it but wait.  ..read more
