Moving those spreader ends forward is going to change the forces on, and the routing of, your upper stays quite a bit. you might even have to move the attach points on the deck in order to support the mast adequately, or even use running backstays to keep things upright. I'm not the engineer who can tell what might happen, but it could turn into a "give a mouse a cookie" project. Sorry, but to answer your real question, as long as the D's boom is, I still don't see you achieving any huge performance difference. When I'm running, the mast lays right against the stays (yeah, the sailmaker loves ..read more

Has anyone converted their folding spreaders to the fixed base? My spreaders currently sweep back quite a lot, and make wing-on-wing with a nice open main impossible. Should I expect much of a performance improvement beating? Thanks! Statistics: Posted by trswem — Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:20 am ..read more

Hi All! I’m currently raptly reading through Chinook’s blog of hie GREAT LOOP trip taken back in 2015 & 2016. This is a great blog… we’re learning new things with each month’s entry! The Admiral is off work The boat is ready (At least as far as getting launched that is….there are follow-on projects that will be done in slip at the marina) Boat interior is spic-&-span Bottom paint is throughly cured The new tow van is ready Dock lines are being washed with fabric softener as this ..read more

Welcome Alban! Very nice vessel! I’m sure you will be enjoying her sleek lines and swift sailing characteristics for many years. We have a section within this forum that you may enjoy going over the history and evolution of the MacGregor line of sailboats. I’ve included the link below: https://macgregorsailors.com/howitstarted.html While, as may be expected, most of the forum participants are in the smaller/shorter under Mac65 category, which is to be somewhat expected given the thousands of vessels produced by Rodger MacGregor, we all share a common interest and passion about our well craf ..read more

Hi! Have you thought about simply raising up the bunks to get the clearance needed for your stub keel? Even if you needed new bunk supports it would be simpler, less pensive and less risk than getting an axle cut and re-welded. Depending upon your trailer configuration, Some 6x6 pressure treated lumber bolted securely on your existing bunk brackets would provide you with a 5-1/2 inch height rise. The 5-or-6 plus inches you seem to need isn’t all that much of an increase but you need to be aware of the slightly increased CG height when trailering down the highways…going slower and taking gen ..read more

Hi All! Be Free is on the right path and it gets more challenging when adding in the “in”efficiency losses. The best one could consider would be a 40-to-50% efficiency (and the reality would probably be much lower than that depending on which design route was chosen to pursue such as eccentric lobe or gearbox or belted pulley.) The use of a cable link to the anchor and using wave action isn’t all that far fetched as, depending upon the anchor mass and how well its dug in, could generate enough force through wave action, but the waves required would really make the ride a bit uncomfortable ..read more

So that stub keel on my boat requires that it be up five inches from the OEM bunks I added wood to my trailer supports. I’ve seen where trailers sometimes have a drop down in the middle of the axle. The rear cross beam would also need that treatment. Thoughts on this? Would the average trailer shop be able to do that or do a need a welding shop? Oh! All these are great points to think about. Thank you, gentle men. Maybe tie a line to the handle and put a bucket on the other end. Let the boats gyrations at anchor do it Statistics: Posted by Ixneigh — Wed Apr 24, 2024 1:41 am ..read more
