I wanted to replace an outlet today, I've got a fancy new one with a USB-A & USB-C port. I've changed outlets countless times over the years, but since I've moved to my condo 6 years ago, I've learned that I know nothing. Here's the wiring for the old outlet, and the new outlet... I dont know where to being... any advice would be helpful. submitted by /u/Oderry [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Do I move basement wiring from main to new finished basement subpanel?

If the main heading isn't clear, I'm going to add a subpanel to my basement when I finish it. Should I run new circuits for the stuff that is currently wired into the main panel for the stuff in the basement for easier maintenance and cleaning up my main panel? I have the furnace, water heater, washer and dryer down there. submitted by /u/tierangst [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

So have had this place for a while and there haven't been any issues. It has 100 AMP service. But it seems atypical to have both a large panel as well as a smaller one. There was nothing marked (and in like 10 years have never had anything trip or need to be re-started). But this year would like to make some changes and do most the work myself (like adding a bathroom fan vents, and changing light fixtures to recessed LEDs) So I thought I should know what goes where, etc. And came across a weird scenario in which I am not sure why this is setup like this. Here is a link to both panels open -&g ..read more

Should I become an electrician?

So I’m 35, good enough shape. Familiar with working outdoors and physical work. College dropout but smart enough I think with a 90percentile SAT score. It seems like a job of puzzles. That’s got tediousness and math and problem solving. And I’m looking for something with some level of autonomy, and deference to my knowledge. And intellectually stimulating. My work history isn’t related but I believe I have the skill set. I get there’s a spectrum of job types but am I anywhere in the ballpark of the job description? submitted by /u/willett_art [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I want to update the electrical panel in my house and I’ve used the above panel before without plug on neutral. Now that I’m looking for another one I can only find the panels with plug on neutral option. Is that the only thing available now because of how many AFCI and GFCI breakers are required? Any advice is welcome! submitted by /u/teacher_teacher [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

3 wires carrying load attached to one outlet

Does anyone know what is going on here. I was under the impression that only one of the hot wires should be bringing in power. But all 3 are powered and were all attached to the same outlet. I was just opening up the wall to piggytail a new outlet. submitted by /u/JordanRooo [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Re-wiring my Generac GP17500e for Camlock

I’m working on rewiring my Generac GP17500e to have camlock #2 type w leads and putting an 80a breaker in front of the female cam lock pigtails. I’m trying to decide if I should move all the other circuits to be after the 80a breaker or just chain them as they currently are (ex: currently the 50a, 30a and 20a breakers are all at the same level, nothing is tied in underneath another breaker). Wiring diagram for reference: https://www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/manufacturer/generac-engine-part/generator/portable-generators/gp-series/gp17500e/g0057352/wiring-diagram-0h0730a Origina ..read more
