Rubber Ducking

Working on a Campervan for a customer today and the owner sat in to chat with me (friends of family). She was highly amused by how verbal I was when addressing the wires, fuses, consumer unit, or connectors... I would say things like "right well one of you two is the faulty one, so I'm going to cut you both, but I promise I'll fix you back again, but we need to find the fault here and I suspect one of you is kissing cousins with one of these negative wires" My mate is a software engineer... Can I extend a ring?

Competence aside, legally, can I add a couple of sockets to a ring? I’m having a media wall fitted and wanted to use the one socket next to the chimney breast, which is part of the downstairs socket ring and add on 3/4 double sockets. It’s a 32A MCB wired in 2.5mm2 t&e, which I’ll replicate when I add the additional sockets ..read more

Wiring in a day/night sensor for one outdoor light

Scenario: One outdoor light switched on/off from a closed porch. I want to add an already purchased day/night sensor to sit alongside the light switch. These are the pictures of the switch & traced back to the Junction box (not my wiring). The thicker cable on the right connects directly to the light & the switch is middle top. On the sensor it's labelled LN in and NA out. Obviously, I can leave it switched on with censor in place, but would like to retain the option of switching both off.... Outside electrics

I intend running an SWA cable from my garage consumer unit on a 32A connection to provide electrics at an outside bar [approx 50m distant]. I want two double sockets at the bar about 3 metres apart . Can I connect from the end of the 50m to an outside double socket and connect my second socket direct to that socket? Or do I need to terminate the 50m cable into a junction box and connect the double sockets of that junction box independently? Thank you ..read more

Switched and unswitched fused spurs in a wet room

I've recently had a wet room installed and the electrician has put in a switched fused spur for a heated towel rail, which also works off the central heating, the only way to turn this on/ off is using the switch on the spur in the wet room which is situated just below the wash basin. There is also a fused spur to future proof the supply of a hoist / lift for my disabled son. This is on the same wall as the shower control panel and just to the right hand side approximately 600mm away from... Switched and unswitched fused spurs in a wet room ..read more

Hi All, hope everyone is doing fine. I am new to this forum and hoping that someone can enlighten me about a product that I am after. Basically, I’ve just managed to land a commercial re-wire work for my self which the board is already installed which is 3 Phase (MEM 3/Eaton) board. I am after getting a 40A, triple pole RCBO which I can’t find. I’ve been able to find 16A, 20A and 32A triple pole RCBO’s but I can’t find 40A which makes me believe they don’t actually do it. So I am seeking... 40A, Triple pole Eaton/MEM 3 RCBO ..read more

Washing Machine and Dishwasher Plugged into Sockets on Countertop

I recently bought a student rental property. Currently the dishwasher and washing machine are plugged in above the countertop. The wires reach from behind / below and come over the front of the appliances and plug into a double countertop plug. This is shared with a microwave and a kettle. So if the washer is on then you cant have toast. Obviously this is wrong and I plan to install a full new kitchen and will rewire it in the summer. In the meantime the tenants dont seem to mind.... Wiring matters March 2024 and youtube videos are telling us the problems when there are two supplies for example solar, battery, and EV of using unidirectional devices. However I have found adverts for bidirectional devices like this View attachment 101811 where terminals are marked load, so the Wiring matters March 2024 said: A... Click to expand...
