Arc shield on fused disconnect

Hi - I used a 2 pole general duty AC fused disconnect (https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-60-A...-General-Duty-Safety-Switch-TG3222R/202978654) on a solar install and was failed for not having an arc shield. As far as i can tell, an arc shield is not sold for this AC fused disconnect. Does anyone know the code section that requires this for a PV install which uses line side taps? I understand why this is desirable (make line side of fused disconnect touch safe when... Read more ..read more

I am curious as to whether you can run 24VDC wires (in this case utilizing 14awg XHHW) with a cat6 cable in the same rigid metal conduit It is to serve the same equipment, and only have the one available underground conduit ..read more

Panel scheduling and sizing

I have 3 3 phase panels I need to set up for a project, reaching out for help is allowed, and using calculators is allowed. I somewhat understand that on all 3 phases, I want to balance the loads across them and don't think I need too much help. When it comes to grounding, bonding, and sizing wire sizing. I am not completely uneducated but don't know where to begin. I have a 3-phase main panel 480Y/277V, and 2 208/120 sub-panels. Let's say my total load across one sub-panel is 15000kVA... Can you splice in an LB if you have the cubic inches? There is no ground screw to bond the LB. The ridged pipe does ground the LB ..read more

Self Employment

Good morning everyone, for years I’ve been tossing around the idea of self employment. I have my masters, but have been with the same company for 10 years. All my w2 related experience is industrial / commercial fields. No problem running jobs in the million dollar ranges. I’m treated well, usually don’t have to stress out, and am making 100k with no overtime (which I think I will be capped out at with no management positions opening up in the future). Within the last 1-3 years, I’ve really... Read more ..read more

Conduit fill with conduit in conduit

In general it’s not allowed to run low-voltage wiring along with line voltage in the same conduit. However, it seems to be permissible to put another conduit in the conduit through which to run the low voltage wiring. Example: 1-1/4 EMT with 3 THHN wires and one 1/2 ENT. Through the ENT Ethernet. How does conduit fill work in this case? Here is my attempt: 1-1/4 EMT has 1.23sqin cross section. 1/2 ENT has 0.196sqin. Now I subtract them and the remaining area in the EMT is 1.031sqin which... Breaker Sizes

Just a general, basic question. How come the smallest standard size for circuit breakers, based on the NEC (the 2017 version, Table 240.6(A)), is 15 amps? Some loads, for example, only draw several amps... 2 amps, 3.6 amps, 4 amps, etc. How come there aren't 5 or 10 amp circuit breakers, and it only starts at 15 amp breakers? If a load is only drawing 3 amps, how does a 15 amp circuit breaker protect it, if the breaker is sized so much larger than what the load draws ..read more

Eaton plug-in neutral circuit panels vs old style AFCI/GFCI breakers.

I can save a trip to the job which is a distance. I am not familiar with plug-in Eaton panels. I have a new old-style Eaton dual-purpose circuit breaker. It has a power lug and a neutral lug on top of each other instead of the newer breakers have the lugs side by side. This old-style Eaton breaker is about 1 & 3/4 inches longer than a standard Eaton AFCI breaker that has lugs next to each other. Both are the BR type. By any chance would anyone know if this long Eaton breaker will fit into... Read more ..read more
