Pre-Screening Stance:
Dream Scenario looks funny, interesting, and – most importantly – worthy of having Nicolas Cage as its star. Fingers crossed that it lives up to the hype I’ve amassed for it.
Post-Screening Ramble:
I liked Dream Scenario quite a bit, but it’s certainly a high concept, heady, oddball film that won’t work for everyone. The story gets underway with an introduction to Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage), a tenured professor/family man who generally leads a pretty regular life. One day, Paul is keyed into the fact that more and more people have been seeing him in their dreams, and t ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
Admittedly, I’m not exactly jazzed about The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes. The last couple of films didn’t really work for me, and the decision to bring back director Francis Lawrence feels like a tired move. Furthermore, and this is probably the real issue, the trailers just haven’t sold me on it. Who knows though, maybe it’ll be a pleasant surprise.
Post-Screening Ramble:
The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes is a weird ride, but I liked it. Let’s start with the plot, which is centered around Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), a young m ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
Thor: Love And Thunder was so terrible that it’s now easy to side-eye Taika Waititi and wonder if he’s still got any of the magic that helped him create standout films like Hunt For The Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok. Fortunately, Next Goal Wins does look like fun, so maybe there’s a chance it serves as a return to form for Taika.
Post-Screening Ramble:
Next Goal Wins is what I would describe as just fine, but it really doesn’t do much towards making me fully come back around on Taika Waititi. It has some of his usual charm, humor, and heart, but it also feels like a fi ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
May December looks like the sort of movie that would be featured on Lifetime, but I’m still looking forward to it. The cast is rock solid, and I’m a fan of Todd Haynes, who directed Carol and Dark Waters.
Post-Screening Ramble:
May December makes for a pretty interesting ride. The plot is centered around Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), an actress doing research for an upcoming film about a couple – Gracie (Julianne Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton) – who were long ago a hot topic for the tabloids due to their age gap. Or well, to be fair, the age gap was only part of the prob ..read more

Omni – Exacto
A new Omni album is on the way – Souvenir will be out on February 16. This sharp post-punk number makes for a snazzy first single.
Ty Segall – My Room
The last couple of Ty Segall singles didn’t really land for me, but I like this one a lot – it’s really got a nice, full sound. His new album, Three Bells, will be out on January 26.
Frog – Maybelline
Man, this track from Frog really sounds like a lot of the indie/blog rock that got sent my way in the early years of SOTO. The band’s new album, Grog, is due out on November 17.

Well, I didn’t see a whole lot at this year’s Austin Film Fest, but what I did manage to catch was great. See below for a recap.
SALTBURN
Plot: A poor kid befriends a rich kid and finds himself invited to spend the summer at a sprawling estate. Things get weird.
Review: If you like your movies decadent and twisted, then you’ll like Saltburn. Directed by Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), it’s one of those efforts that gets off to a fairly standard start but as it goes on it just wildly spirals into something else entirely. It’ll be interesting to see the discourse that it generates, a ..read more

Pre-Screening Stance:
I’m a really big fan of Sofia Coppola, so I’m just naturally inclined to be excited about a new film from her. With that being said, Priscilla looks great and I’ve heard nothing but positive things about it for a while now.
Post-Screening Ramble:
With two award-worthy lead performances, a stellar soundtrack, and a massively compelling story, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla is absolutely one of the year’s best films. It gets underway with an introduction to – of course – Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), a 14-year old living on a military base in Germany with her parents. After a chan ..read more

MGMT – Mother Nature
MGMT’s previous album, 2018’s Little Dark Age, remains a big favorite of mine, so I’m excited to finally be getting a follow up – Loss Of Life will be out on February 23. This first single definitely has an Oasis lean to it.
Cloud Nothings – Final Summer
Cloud Nothings have hopped from Car Park to Pure Noise Records and this crisp track is their first effort for the label. By the way, if you’re in Austin, they’re playing the Far Out Lounge on November 29.
Footballhead – Habits
Footballhead has joined the Tiny Engines roster and they’ll be puttin ..read more
