A beautiful testimonial from the Winter Wellness Challenge, Helen I hate to use an overworked cliché but the best way I can describe the combined festival of the OHYP Winter Wellness Studio Challenge and Estell’s birthday celebration month is as the definitive gift that keeps on giving. On so many levels: from the chance to dress-up and party, paint your hair purple, savour Perth’s best vegan cupcakes, meringues and melon shark; to the perfectly-timed reminder that committing to three classes a week is such a better choice than more couch, screen or wine time. There was the gift of the chanc ..read more

International Yoga Day – the story of Tree Pose

To celebrate International Yoga Day, here’s the story of Tree Posture, a pose about persistence and dedication, love and patience. Long ago, Queen Sita, the wife of King Rama, was one day kidnapped by Demon King Ravana. He took her to his palace, and magically hid her away. She refused to spend any time in his palace, instead she retreated to the garden and sat amongst the ashoka trees. Ashoka means “without sorrow”, and are symbols of love in Indian folklore. She lived under the trees, would sit day after day with her back against the tree, and she breathed and she waited. She concentrated he ..read more

What causes tight hamstrings? Most people try to get rid of tight hamstrings through stretching. However not being able to touch your toes or feeling the sensation of tightness down the back of the legs are necessarily caused by hamstring limitation, it can also be sciatic nerve tension. It’s important to figure out if the discomfort you feel are actual hamstring tightness or sciatic nerve issues. Nerves and muscles DO NOT like to be stretched the same way, so knowing where you are tight plays a major role in your flexibility. A muscle will relax over time in a prolonged stretch, however the ..read more

Hamstrings vs Sciatic Nerve
Original Hot Yoga Blog

What causes tight hamstrings? There’s 3 muscles that make up the hamstring muscles. These muscles start at the pelvis, at the sit bones and they run down the back of the thighs and insert on the top of the lower leg bones. Your hamstrings get stretched by pulling the pelvis away from the lower leg. It’s important to note that ankle position does not matter in a true hamstring stretch. The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body, and starts in the lower back, runs down the back of the thighs between the hamstrings and continues through the calf to the bottom of the foot. Because the nerv ..read more

Why We Love Awkward Pose
Original Hot Yoga Blog

Awkward Pose is so important as it helps to create stability in your hips and pelvis. When you sit in a chair, the weight of your upper body presses on your femur (upper thigh bones) and your hamstrings. The femur are connected to your pelvis through the hip sockets, but when you sit in a chair, the femur ends up resting in one position. When you sit for long periods of time, your body compensates by using the long muscles in the back, and in the legs to keep your body from moving. Over time, they will tighten to keep your stable, and when you stand up, those muscles will stay engaged, tugging ..read more
