How did you first discover Bikram yoga? A friend told me about it in late 2007. It sounded like an intense workout, so I decided to give it a try. I took my first class (taught by Michele) in January of 2008. What have you gained from your yoga practice? I’ve learned to be patient as progress takes time (months and years!). This was hard for me as I’m not the most patient person! I’ve learned the value of breath. The harder the class, the more I focus on my breathing. What has been your greatest struggle or accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment was regaining the strength and flexibilit ..read more

Hi everyone, Michele Vennard here, owner of Bikram Yoga San Jose, chatting with staff teachers Matt and Sarah Newman. We thought it would be super fun to talk about a lot of the Bikram idioms that you hear in the dialogue. They have a good meaning to them in how you develop in your yoga practice, so we want to unpack some of those. One of the first that we were looking at is, “Having means nothing if you don’t know how to use it.” Sarah: These are energizing statements when you’re in the class. It’s like this short, quick statement on the top of a goldmine that you can keep going into, but ..read more

How did you first discover Bikram yoga? Singing has always been my passion and hobby since my late mother (a semi-classical singer/teacher in Bombay, India) taught me just before her death in Sept 2020. Two years of a nasty divorce took its toll on my mind and body. I was going through traumatic suffering of heart and mind – although not quite into depression, not having to meet my young adult son, a child prodigy. Getting into singing was a definite solace for my heart and mind. Soon after my divorce in August 2020, I wanted to start fresh and reboot my life. A friend and BYSJ member, Elena ..read more

Vitality is your birthright – tenth annual International Day of Yoga

What is vitality anyway? The word itself sounds lively and attractive.  According to the Cambridge dictionary, it simply means energy and strength. Hmm. Okay, but it’s a bit boring, wouldn’t you say, given the animation you feel in just saying the word itself – Vitality! According to Google, it is a term used to describe a person’s ability to live, grow, and develop. Okay, now we are getting somewhere, as I can feel a skip in my step just reading this definition. But how about this: “the peculiarity distinguishing the living from the nonliving,” states Merriam Webster’s dictionary.  ..read more

“I want to skip Camel pose” is my initial instinct in every yoga class. For the first week, I avoided it altogether. However, my lower back started to ache, so I decided to give Camel pose a try. To my surprise, my back pain lessened, and I came to realize that each yoga posture has a unique and important role. I took a hot yoga class during my pharmacy residency in Palm Springs. After moving back home to Campbell, my cousin introduced me to BYSJ, knowing I missed the warm desert climate. I loved it – the heated yoga studio allowed my muscles to stretch safely and helped me sweat out toxins ..read more
