Muffler noise level

Will be replacing the exhaust system on my bike. Will be removing the turnout type mufflers and head pipes that the PO had installed on my Hi-Rider, as I mentioned in previous posts. Want to install "peashooter"mufflers as most guys call them. There are a number of sources for these mufflers and would like recommendations or suggestions from others about sources. Do some makers offer some decent noise reduction as opposed to straight through design? Would rather have some that are a little... Read more ..read more

I was driving home on a business trip yesterday and stopped for gas. Next door to the gas station was bike salvage yard, so on a whim I went in and asked if they had any Norton stuff, to my surprise they said yes! There were a few grungy Commando bits in a box in the basement, but next to that was an NOS MkIII black cap muffler! It’s not something I needed, but I figured someone here might, so I grabbed it. Unfortunately they only had 1. I’ll post it in the sales section shortly. B ..read more

Atlas Belt Drive

Hi all After giving it quite a bit of thought, I decided last week to spring for a belt drive kit from RGM and put the whole issue of primary oil leaks in the rear view mirror. It came yesterday and one thing that I'm not sure that fully get is that the kits include new stator studs that are 5/16" when my my old ones are 1/4". The stator does fit over them but leaves very little room for adjustment to the rotor if needed. I asked Roger about this and he said mentioned how one might get a... Read more ..read more

I have owned my Norton 74 850 since buying it new in 1976, it has gone through a lot of changes in the 48+ years I have owned it and the biggest was converting it to the 1957 Wideline Featherbed frame in 1980/82, it has also had a few great upgrade too it in the last 15 years, it has had 3 rebuilds but the last one was just to replace the crank cases as my original cases had hair line fractures around the main crank seal and a broken piece where the front centre stud screwed in the crank... Wanting to fit a sidecar to my 961.

I've decided it's time for me to look seriously at fitting a sidecar to my 2014 961 Sport. So far the only info I've found so far are the three bikes shown below. A prototype built by Egli, last heard of as disassembled and stored in the workshop. This interesting tilting bike version from a German manufacturer. And this one from a forum post that I've lost a link to. Does anyone here have any info on other 961 outfits? I've been... Read more ..read more

Rear Wheel turns with kicker - no clutch

I started my MK III the other day, after installing new CNW EZ Clutch kit, pushrod seal nut, clutch center hub, stepped washer, circlip, aliexpress sprag, and new plungers with springs and white nylon pieces for hydraulic chain tensioner. The result was a horrible squeeling sound that went along with engine rpm. I opened the primary back up and it all looked fine, of course. I wondered about the sprag, but it really should be fine, so I re-adjusted the clutch, this time as the Workshop... Read more ..read more

So I decided to do something on the Norton. While doing service work on the front wheel , I haven't ever liked the staking process. The results always ugly. I guess I'll never be a professional staker! The bearing seal retention washer is similar to the older style for the rear sprocket. The washer is close fit in the hub hole, tapped home fully, then using your best screwdriver (humor inserted) proceed to stake! Last order from Andover I bought a supply of seal plates for front and rear... Read more ..read more
