The photo above shows where we’re playing the ELO (Ella, Louis & Oscar) Show in Germany this month! It hardly seems possible that it’s already September! Season of ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ as Keats would have it, and less poetically, Harvest Festival as the rest of us will no doubt remember from our schooldays. But did […]

Woohoo! Summer is finally here!
Out in the garden the air is rich with the scent of roses and sweet peas, and the smell of barbecues… (and so will your washing be if you don’t bring it in quick-smart).
It’s a marvellous time of year: Wimbledon is here, England are still in the Euros (just…) and the Love Supreme Festival is about to kick-off.
Everyone seems to have moved into their outdoor agenda: drinks on the patio, entert ..read more

Hello jazz friends (or should that be fiends?)
According to Dean Martin’s 1959 hit ‘It’s June in January’, but if this weather keeps up 2024 will feel more like January in June… Hands up if you put your heating on at least once since the last SPJC newsletter? Don’t blame you… However, the Met Office assure us that temperatures are going up so maybe summer is here, just hiding behind an umbrella, a bit shy about showing itself.
Here at Splash Point Towers June means cake. No fewer than three key people have birthdays ..read more

You all know the song ‘April in Paris’ – right? First featured in the 1932 Broadway musical ‘Walk a Little Faster’ and written by Yip Harburg (music) and Vernon Duke (lyrics). He’d never been to Paris so he had to get a brochure from a travel agent to get him in the mood to write the words…
In the song, a woman sits in a Paris café drinking wine. It’s April, of course. But instead of remembering some past romantic encounter, she has never been in love. She wishes she had been so that she’d have something to remember.
Doris Day sang it in the film ‘April in Paris’ – but the ve ..read more

Hello and welcome to February, a month which often gets a bad press largely on account of the weather but which has actually got a lot going for it. You’re wondering what that could possibly be?
Well for a start it’s short, at 28 days (but 29 this year! A bonus day!) the shortest month of the year. Lots of nice things are short… (please stop right there – Ed.)
It has Valentine’s Day mid-month – cue chocolates, flowers, dinner and a show. You could even buy some for someone else too.
The daylight is stretching out noticeably now.
The February credit card bill i ..read more

Well here we are, first-footing into your inbox with a virtual bottle of Scotch and piece of coal, to wish you the very best for 2024!
We’ve already almost forgotten that other year – what was it now – but we know it had highlights such as…

Hello lovely jazz fans!
And so we reach the last month of another highly successful Splash Point Jazz year. Where did 2023 go to so soon, without much more than a sniff of summer, not to mention a completely sodden Autumn!
Looking back, we can see exactly where it went: in a flurry of top-notch concerts, from Elaine Delmar to Zoe Schwarz, and Xhosa Cole to Bruce Adams. It was the year of Neal’s album launch ‘The Maximalist’, and the start of his residency at the amazing London Raffles hotel in Whitehall (see above). Then there were: the Tennis Finals; anot ..read more
