Bike, trains and automobiles Our Partnerships and Marketing Manager Helen Scholes shares her views on how Co Bikes and rail are a match made in Devon. “This month I’ve been busy talking about one of my favourite subjects, shared mobility! And, how our e-bikes and the train network work so well together. “Earlier this month, as part of Stantec’s National Transport Planning Day, I was invited to talk to Jon Berry, Alan Swan, Peter Snell and their colleagues from the company’s South West offices about how our Co Bikes help connect Exeter and keep people moving, sustainably and efficiently. Along with pollution causing concern for health, a rise in vehicle emissions poses a real threat to climate change whilst the congestion they cause affects our wallets and the wider economy. ** However, there are alternatives already available in communities across the UK. These include car clubs, bike hire schemes, car sharing and the latest innovation: mobility hubs. Together, these mean that commuters can still use the roads but in a different, more sustainable way. Does this mean that congestion and pollution could one day become a thing of the past? With 3.1m more private cars registered ..read more

Are electric cars worth it? We caught up with long time Co Cars business member, One Voice Media to find out. Guest blog from Lisa Vanstone, managing director of One Voice Media; I’ve not driven anywhere further than Cornwall for an age, so I was slightly apprehensive about our forthcoming work trip to Stroud.   My colleague booked one the new Co Cars Volkswagen ID.3s for us. They look fab, but I’ve never driven a fully electric car before either.  So, with some nerves I headed to Haven Banks to collect the car at 7.30 one morning. My members card unlocked the car no problem.&n ..read more

Electric car buyers are currently faced with unprecedented wait times for delivery of their cars. This is due to a global shortage of parts exacerbated by pandemic fallout and the Ukrainian conflict, with delays of up to 18 months reported on popular models such as the VW ID.3. If you find yourself in this predicament and are patiently (or not) waiting for your electric car, then we can help. We have several ID.3s waiting to be deployed at new locations which means they are now available for longer hires over the summer. Cars can be booked in 4-week blocks at a cost of £650 (plus 2p a mile up ..read more

Are car clubs worth it? With the rising cost of fuel, the answer is yes!  We’ve all seen in the news this week – and experienced the pinch at the pumps -as petrol prices continue to soar with a rise of almost 6p a litre at UK forecourts over the recent bank holiday weekend. A typical family petrol car now costs on average £100 to fill. The RAC has called (and rightly so) for radical government intervention after petrol prices hit 182.3p a litre yesterday (8th June), according to figures from the data analytics company Experian Catalist. At these sky-high prices, running one car is a size ..read more

Co Bikes, you’ve all seen them whizzing around Exeter, but how do there always seem to be bikes at a station when needed and what makes these iconic white and orange electric bikes so special? Some might say it’s magic. Other’s might say luck, but we will let you into a little secret, it’s a little bit of both. Over the past three years, since the scheme was relaunched, we have been working hard to bring more bikes to more locations to suit the needs of our users. We wish it were as simple as to just say, “we’ll stick a bike station here or there,” but the reality is that it takes a lot of pl ..read more
