Just got home from picking up a JD 425.  I had gone to get a Husqvarna zero turn but he offered the same price on the 425 and I haven't had much luck with Husqvarna's in the past so I brought the JD home. I have a couple of weeks to try it out and see what I think. It has new tires and a new hood. But the dash instruments don't work. It has power steering and a diff lock but it's a pretty large machine ( I have become fond of the smaller more nimble machines) I hope to mow a few hours with it in the next few days to get a feel for it.  Do any of you have any experience with th ..read more

Leaf vac hard top or bonnet replacement

I have one of the rear PTO powered, rear mounted leaf vac's that blows up into the trailer and has the vinyl cloth bonnet/cover.  There were some threads on here about people that had made hard tops for them or other means of replacing the NLA bonnet, but the pictures all seem to be dead links.  Does anybody have any examples of this handy or pointers?   ..read more

Current Simplicity mower decks - spindles and other repairs

So, I've reached the point where I no longer want to be tearing spindles apart and rebuilding them when the bearings go bad, keys break, etc. Are the newer decks (meaning, something from the current generation of Legacy/Prestige/Broadmoor/Regent) built with sealed arbors that are easily replaced (i.e. unbolt old one, bolt in new one) as a single unit versus the multitude of parts on the older decks (I have 2 48" decks for my large-frame tractors ..read more

I have an Al Eden repower CH18 in my 7117H.  Oil kept disappearing, I pulled the engine today after seeing oil on the the spark plug wires.  The rear cover and it was just full of grease or oil sludge.  I pulled the flywheel and replaced the seal.  I had brought the "wrong" one before when replacing the one on the front of the tractor. Well after replacing the seal and cleaning everything up from the engine fins to the cover, I was able to re-assemble everything and put the engine back into the tractor.  It started!  First time I have attempted such a task. I foun ..read more

Sunstar hydro pump failure and options?

So I picked up a Duetz 1920 last fall. It’s the one now being used for my loader project and foot pedal hydro conversion. I’ve already swapped the bad rear end out. My question is can I save the 2 speed locking diff by taking the pump off my sunstar 16 single speed rear end?    Failed rear end symptoms. No motion of any kind jacked up, no PS of any kind either. My only reason for asking is for storage or discard purposes.  ..read more

Belts Filters Bearings ....Keeping track of them all

Heres a simple and very effective way to keep track of all the different belts, filters ,  bearings, headlights, and anything else you use over the years....and what they go on. Find a unused wall section in your shop and do this:   Whenever I buy  new replacement items like these, I just cut off the package end with all the brand & part name and numbers on it, then I get out a permanent marker and write  on it just what pieces of machinery it fits on. The just staple it to the wall for future reference.  This is a system that really works, and I never have to dig ..read more
