I am trying to find the model names/numbers for these two planes. The Keen Kutter has the saw and eye logo so it can't date much past 1900. I'm fairly certain it was made by Ohio Tool Co, and it looks like a predecessor to the Keen Kutter KHS (OTC 304) as it's tote is recessed into the razee (instead of mounted on a cast plate) and there is no bolt head on the knob. I have been unable to find an EC Simmons or OTC catalog that is that early, but I have seen the same model as my plane on...

Lets file this under “there are no dumb questions” because…. these are probably dumb questions.
I need to joint a couple of ~1/8” thick boards. I think the proper way to do this is with a handplane and shooting board. Ive watched the shooting board videos and then moved on to getting the planer ready. I should note, i dont do much with a hand plane. Mostly rough work so ive never tuned or sharpened mine (even noticed a couple of nicks in the blade) ive watched a number of videos but i cant...

I wanted to take a second to tell you the good news about 4R rules...
A 4R rule has 4 different Scales on the 4 edges. Each is graduated in different increments with etched lines of different lengths. Adjacent lines are never the same length. The 4 scales are "eighths", 'teenths, 'seconds, and 'forts according to my Chicago public schools drafting teacher...
Precision means you can accurately repeate the same measurement. The ability to consistently come...

I just acquired the below vise via cl for $50. It is pretty darn big; it opens to 12", is about 3 1/4" deep and perhaps 9 or 10" across. It's a quick release which I haven't used before- it seems like the mechanism is to slide closed as far as possible then you only get a 3/4 turn to tighten up, right?
The plate that mounts to the bench has no hole for attaching a wooden pad. I thought I would build it into the bench so the edging/ skirt covers the rear pad. Is this a good way to go?

this is just a general question, something I still have trouble with when planing the edge of a board is when I get to the end of the board, I'll often get tearout on the other side (the side perpendicular to the edge I've just planed). Is this just a muscle memory skill? I need to learn to ease up off the plane as I get close to the edge? Or is this unavoidable ..read more

I came across this tool at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. It was on display in a kiosk manned by a volunteer. Neither of us have a clue as to its use.
Anyone?
