Hi
I was given three tool boxes with some rusty tools that are worth saving
They have surface rust - pic below
What’s a good way of cleaning these? Can someone recommend a product I can soak these in and then hose off?
Thanks ..read more

I’ve been making another oilstone box in sapele, and as with my previous one I have been getting a lot of tear out when router planing the bottom of the recesses.
Is this likely to just be a sharpness issue (it is a veritas router plane and I’m still getting used to trying to keep the iron sharp - it’s small and fiddly)? Or is sapele prone to this. Granted, router planes aren’t usually used for finishing surfaces that you can see but it would have been nice to get a smooth surface. The...

A friend was cleaning out her deceased father's workshop and brought me this layout devise that has me stumped. After lurking here for years, I know that someone would know just what we have here. Hi all
been a while since last posting, I got hold of some vintage chisels and noticed that the edge had a slight curve in the grind from the left to right corner on some firmer chisels. Is this a feature or an anonmally due to poor sharpening technique from the previous owner?

The two planes are the Record Rebate Plane and the Stanley Plane.
As you can see it is rusty, worse the sole was pitted.
So a trip to a friend with a Magnetic surface grinder.
This removed the rust and trued the sole up, sot it is a 90Degress to the sides.
A few coats of French polish.
The Rebate Plane only needed a clean and the handles polished.
The Sole was treated to a...

I’m still going through some inherited tools and would like some advice on a Marples try square.
The handle and face plate look like they will clean/polish up fairly easily, but the blade is completely trashed.
Before I start at it are there any pointers on the best way to go about? Also, for the blade, I couldn’t tell if it was screws on the face plate or punch pins in the handle that held it in place.

Who made this TYZACK screw-sided, cast, panel plane? (Please excuse the dust!)
The Tote is rather on the smallish side...
