On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as Juneteenth, a federal holiday. For many of folks across the country, this Wednesday is the first time having the day off. My favorite month is April as it’s my birthday month :)!
This month, I'm shining a spotlight on two noteworthy events. Firstly, there's the Artist Branding Workshop taking place at the Overdue Recognition Art Gallery in Bowie, MD on April 11. I met the organizer of this event, Dontae Muse during the Harlem Fine Arts Show in February, where he enlightened me about his forthcoming Black Art Gallery Tour. On Thursday, I toured The Walter E. Washington Convention Center art collection by Events DC for the first time. I learned that the Walter E. Washington Convention Center has one of the largest art collections outside of a museum in the District with 137 works by 93 artists.
The collection features a mix of local, national and international artists represents the highlights communities in the District of Columbia in particular the Shaw neighborhood which is where the Convention center is placed in. On a Thursday afternoon, I ventured from Washington DC to Baltimore to attend my first media preview. I am humbled to share that I was able to preview “The Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams" exhibition at The Baltimore Museum of Art. Special thank you to Anne and Sarah for understanding my mission of The Black Curation.

The next time you explore an art gallery or museum, capture images of the artwork that captivates you the most. Once you get home, pull out a paper and pen so you can begin write what stands out to you most. Here’s a guide:
