Keeping an Ash Round from Cracking?

This might not be the correct forum, apologies if necessary. I recently dropped a very large ash tree, over 30+" at the base, which was dying due to EAB. My neighbor asked for a cookie of the trunk so her daughter could paint it. Cut a (round) cookie, about 3" thick and put it in an unheated garage. I expected it to crack somewhat, but it really cracked in several directions in a very short time. I'd like to try again, but I expect the next one would do the same. I thought of sealing both... Newbie carver trying to create a bowl

I'm dipping my toes into woodturning this year and I'm working on my first bowl project. So far, it's been an exciting learning curve, but I've reached a point where I need to shape the interior of the bowl. Now, I'm stumped on which tool to use for this task. I have both a spindle gouge and a bowl gouge on hand. From what I know, these gouges can be specific in terms of their purpose and use. So, which of these two gouges would be more appropriate for shaping the inside of a bowl? Also... Read more ..read more

Don't really know where to post this. I'm new to modern epoxy pouring. Completely understand epoxies and the basics. Bubbles are the least of my worries. Fully aware what sealed means to make any pour besides a self leveling flat top like was done in the old days poured with polyurethane finish done thirty years ago. Those were messy, had a lot of cleanup and finish work on the edges. This shouldn't be an issue. Temperature is my concern. Like automotive paint it needs to be relatively... Read more ..read more

Variation in Basswood Hardness

I've been a member of our local woodcarving group for over 35 years, doing various types of carving primarily in Basswood but also Cherry, Walnut, and Catalpa. I recently obtained a piece of Basswood from our club supply and found it to considerably denser and harder than a piece from a local a Woodcraft store or some air-dried Basswood I already had. I'm sure both examples are Basswood. Just wondered what might account for the difference in hardness - maybe kiln-dried vs air-dried? Has... Read more ..read more

I have been wanting to get into carving for years now, but never could find the time. Now is the time! Any advice for someone who knows basically nothing? Equipment, methods, starter designs? I am currently using an echo 2511t, echo 280e, and an echo 310. Not sure what I want to carve, but looking for good practice ..read more

I am taking down some dead ash trees for a couple for the winter. Ash Die-back in the UK. The images let see what I still have left, rather than take it all out for firewood. I thought maybe try to do something with the clunp of trunks. I am looking for suggestions on what I can cut out of the remaining trunks. to make it a feature in the fields. I am not a wood carver, just a saw operator from the past with limitations, so basic cutting and carving with chainsaws. Table, bench, chairs or... Read more ..read more

I have a very cool old chunk of wood. It is probably 16''x20'' and 4-5'' thick. I don't know what type of wood it is and I also do not know how I should carve it into a wall hanging. I am thinking about either burning it to a crisp with the torch, sanding it, and finishing it to make a nice burnt wood wall art. Or cleaning it down and stripping off the bark and crap and sanding it super fine to make a nice finished wall... Read more ..read more
