This coming Saturday, Apr. 20, is National Ice Cream Day. The 20th also happens to be the birthday of KYU, the pan-Asian restaurant in the Village, which turns two this weekend. The celebration will include free desserts from an old-fashioned cart set in front of the restaurant between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. Anyone who stops by and posts on social media will be treated to mini munchies, including a cinnamon roll or a miniature version of the restaurant’s signature coconut cake. In May of 2023, a restaurant opened in Brooklyn that made quite a stir by self-identifying as a purveyor of “Jew-ish” cuisine. At first the apparent typo confused many until they recognized it as an embodiment of the modern Jewish-American ethos. This year, as it kicks off another Passover season, Kosher food giant Manischewitz is seeking to make that ethos — “Jew-ish”ness — central to its brand and to the entire retail experience. Toward that end, the company has completely revamped its design, injecting a brighter color palate and even humor. This year will also mark the first in which Manis ..read more

It’s getting so you need a scorecard to play along. If you haven’t yet tried 2024’s most popular new game and logic puzzle, “Who’s Cooking Tonight and Where?” note that the period from Apr. 23 to 26 will give you a set of fresh clues. On those dates Yuu Shimano, owner and head chef of the Michelin-starred Restaurant Yuu, will be participating as guest chef at Shirley Brasserie, across the country in Los Angeles. Don’t assume that Yuu’s team will be idle during this period. They will be at the restaurant’s home kitchen in Greenpoint, creating their own French 15-course Yuu’s omakase m ..read more

When They Ask Where You Heard About the Restaurant, Tell Them a Little Birdy Told You

One of the distinct advantages of living in a city like New York that is conducive to walking is the number of favorable positive chances it provides. Let me give you an example. You’re in an unfamiliar part of town, it’s close to lunchtime, and your olfactory radar picks up the scent of pizza — which as luck would have it — turns out to be great. Just like that, the shop has a new customer and you — and your friends — have a new starred location on Google Maps. If it sounds like an idea whose time has come, that’s because it has. Blackbird, a new restaurant loyalty platform that rewards regul ..read more

Free Sandwich Month at Arby’s; Carvel Brings Back an Oldie But Goodie
Apple Eats

I’ve seen a lot of freebies come and go, but I can’t recall ever seeing one like this latest from Arby’s. Maybe having actor Ving Rhames’s voice thundering the tagline “We have the meats!” just wasn’t enough to generate the response the roast beef chain was hoping for. Whatever the explanation, Arby’s is declaring April to be Free Sandwich Month. Between now and the end of the month, the restaurant will permit “qualifying customers” (i.e., those who have signed up at Arby’s Rewards program), to test-drive four different sandwiches. But there’s more: To prove that Free Sandwich Month is ch ..read more

Frida Kahlo, the avant garde Mexican artist, is the focus of a novel interactive retrospective that begins tonight, Apr. 4, and runs through Sunday evening, Apr. 7. The hands-on event, called Los Sabores de Mi Mexico (“The Flavors of My Mexico”), will delve creatively into the role that food and of course art played in Kahlo’s and her family’s lives. For the four days of the event, a portion of Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall will be transformed into a life-size replica of Kahlo’s kitchen. Each day of the event will offer workshops free to the public. Each morning, a “Paint your Frida ..read more

At first glance, the offer might seem half-baked. It might even sound … dry-roasted. But according to Planters, the peanut folks, the job is 100% percent on the up-and-up. The position even comes with a title: peanutter. Planters is seeking three recent college grads for its next class of “brand ambassadors” and drivers of the peanut-shaped “NUTMobile.” The new hires will travel the country with company mascot and icon Mr. Peanut in his 26-foot long peanut on wheels. The positions are paid and full-time, and last from June 2023 to June 2024. To apply for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, ap ..read more

The Next Frontier: Fast Food Restaurants Imposing Time Limits On Dining In
Apple Eats

In February I reported that fast food chain Wendy’s had announced plans to introduce Uber-like surge pricing on its menu. As I noted at the time, the field testing of the practice, better known as “dynamic pricing,” wasn’t envisioned as starting until 2025, so that fast food devotees could still look forward to plenty of time to chow down on their beloved burgers and fries. But now it’s looking like time is of the essence after all. A strongly worded sign appearing on Reddit six days ago advises (warns?) customers that they will be faced with a 30-minute time limit to eat their food. But that ..read more

For years, Food Network star Guy Fieri has referred to himself as the “Mayor of Flavortown.” Now the honorarium has become official. According to Delish, the City Council of Ferndale, Calif., where Fieri was born bestowed on the 56-year-old host of “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” the title of honorary mayor. Earlier this week, the council also announced plans to celebrate its local celeb by so honoring him and passed a proclamation designating Apr. 5 Guy Fieri Day. “What a great honor,” Fieri told the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce in response. “I was so surprised to be all the way in New York Ci ..read more
