What is Christian meditation?

When you think of meditation, you might not think it connects to your faith. You might have visions of Buddhism or people sitting on pillows and saying, “Om.” Meditation in its simplest form is reflecting on or contemplating something. Whether or not we mean to, we likely all meditate on something - good or bad: that big job interview, how we’ll juggle childcare and work, something kind or rude that was said to us, and so on. You’re likely most familiar with eastern meditation, but it is not the same as Christian meditation. Eastern mediation is often about emptying your mind of any thought ..read more

For when the holidays are hard
Stand Unshaken Blog

I was watching a mini-series as I wrote Christmas cards for my copywriting clients. The episode opened with the main character proclaiming, “I don’t care what anyone says - this is the greatest time of the year. I love Christmas! I really, really do. And that’s because, in my family, Christmas is all about love.” She then went into a spiel about love and romance, and then stopped abruptly when her regular Christmas merriment was essentially thrown out the window. Despite how much I love the holidays (perhaps even more than this fictional character), even I feel the strain of obligations, bu ..read more

Let us never forget the gospel

“I’m just so angry that I keep struggling with this... I feel like it’s been so long, and I’m exhausted. I thought I would have moved on by now.” A few weeks ago, I sat crying on my living room floor as I spoke those words to my roommates. I was referencing some very deep and very painful wounds that I carry around because of my own personal sin and the sin of others done against me. I’ve been a Christian for nearly a decade, and there is a great temptation to believe the lie that we can one day become self-sufficient enough that we can outgrow our need for the gospel. As we live our lives se ..read more

When I’ve gotten my identity wrong

When I first decided to start my own business, there were many challenges that I anticipated. Will anyone want the products I’m creating? How will I find customers? How will I figure out solutions to problems I don’t know anything about? What if it doesn’t work out? These are all challenges I have encountered in some capacity along the way, but the biggest challenge I’ve faced as an entrepreneur came from something else. How will I make sure to keep my identity separate from my business? For some of you that might sound silly, but I’m sure there are others who fully understand how diff ..read more

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning, more than the watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” Psalm 130:5-8 One book - outside of the Bible - has changed my life and met me in some of the deepest valleys I’ve walked through. Hinds’ Feet on High Places is an allegory of Habakkuk 3 that has been a great comfort to me in many seasons of my life. The book is based o ..read more

Doing the things that scare me

Today I’m taking a step toward overcoming my fear of sharing my writing and thoughts with others. This fear honestly seems a bit ironic to me (and maybe to you, too) because I have a degree in journalism. Not to mention, much of the work I do as a communications manager, copywriter and virtual assistant is writing. However, it’s not always my writing that’s really being shared. Sure. I’m the one writing the words, but it isn’t my personal story or my thoughts going out into the world. I’m often communicating someone else’s story. And, it’s the work I love to do. Helping others communicate ..read more
