Hello, I am in the process of doing an addition to my home and need to upgrade the AC unit. The home size is going from 1500 to 2000 sq ft. Can I get away with just replacing the 3-ton ground unit with a 3.5 and tying in to the existing attic unit? I'm already past the loan I took out for the addition, I need to figure out how to make this happen. Thanks! Pete ..read more

Insulating supply trunk w/ foil polyiso

I've got a sheetmetal supply trunk coming off a furnace in a basement/crawlspace and I'm planning to wrap and tape most of it with 3/4" foil faced polyiso. Should I face the foil in to the duct or out? I understand that radiant barriers (foil face) doesn't work unless you have an air gap between the foil and surface being insulated. Any ideas on how much gap and how to space it out? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk ..read more

As the title suggests. Scratching my head. My HVAC guy sucked horribly on this install. Have fixed piles of leaks and mixed up comm lines. That's all good now. I shouldn't have subbed. Typically I handle installs, but can't trouble shoot or service (I'm a hands-on GC building one or two houses a year). This particular system is a multi zone 24k btu condenser with a 6k btu head and an 18k btu head. HVAC guy ran a 5/8 suction line to the 18k btu unit, should have been 1/2, and a 3/8... Doing a new radiant system over 3/4 Advantech, in the past I’ve installed 5/4 sleepers, installed tubing, poured sand and cement mix over top then plywood or tile board to sleepers, it’s worked well, but it’s been awhile so was wondering if there’s something better out there today ..read more

Roof structure venting versus insulation, avoiding rotten root sheathing

Hello fellow handy men (and women, I'm sure): I'm posting this here as a ventilation-adjacent question. Conventional wisdom for attics has always been, as far as I know, to properly vent the space from the soffit to the ridge vent to guard against mold on the underside of the sheathing. In my case, I plan to finish the attic. So my roof structure will be filled with fiberglass. I plan on an additional vapor barrier/ insulation boost by applying 1" rigid foam over the fiberglass. I think I need one. The air in my house is so dry my nose burns and I have trim splitting. I'm guessing it's because it's been colder than well diggers backside for the last week or so. I don't want to add one to my central heat/AC system because I'm lazy, and it's really cold in the attic. Any recommendations for a portable unit? If it came from amazon that would also be a good thing because the roads around here are all a mess from the snow and freezing rain. Being from California and... Humidifier ..read more

Heater exhaust vent

Hi, we had a Reznor 250k UDX heater installed. The vent going out the side seems questionable with the type cap installed, being 90deg. Also the proximity to the building feels close. The vent docs say 3ft from building overhang. The install docs also show a different type cap used. I'm sure this new model heater is very efficient and little heat goes out that, but I just want to make sure it is indeed right. Install vent link... Heater exhaust vent ..read more
