Letters to Initiates – Motive Attribution Asymmetry

When it comes to consciousness, it is Divinely intelligent and beyond our understanding. As a general rule, anything that happens which supports what we believe will be seen by us, and anything that doesn’t will waft away from us. Even our brain plays a role in this, sorting stimulus from our day into conscious and subconscious piles so we are not overwhelmed with the vastness of it all. This is then further added to in our clever modern era by news feeds that are set up based on algorithms of what we might be most interested in reading. The rest we never even see. Shiva and I often have a lau ..read more

Devotion: Letters to Initiates 12 – Nivedanam
Shakti Durga

Nivedanam means that we fully surrender ourselves to the Divine. This is an advanced state of consciousness, one that we can strive towards. Sometimes that dance is one step forward and two steps back, as the ego re-asserts itself. The core of this bhakti practice is to offer yourself and everything you are, have and be to the Divine. We don’t hold back. We don’t say: “well God you can have this and this and this but not this…” It’s easier said than done. So difficult can surrender be in practice that the best way to achieve it is to practice some of the other limbs of Bhakti yoga at the same ..read more

Devotion: Letters to Initiates 11 – Sakhayam

Sakhayam means considering the Divine to be our closest, most intimate friend. How could this be when the Divine is so vast and invisible to boot? Some can cultivate this state through the philosophy of Advaita, a philosophy which says we are no different from the Divine. Through Bhakti this concept is celebrated and enlivened. Usually Sakhayam will involve awareness of the Divine as a form that one can relate to. In Christianity this is Jesus. For others it is Krishna, or Durga and so on. This form might be on your altar as a deity but might also be by your bedside so you can say goodnight; o ..read more

Devotion: Letters to Initiates 10 – Dasyam
Shakti Durga

Dasyam means being the servant. It inspires us to be constantly aware of the Divine as the conductor and orchestrator of our life, to whom we are a humble and devoted servant. We spiritual travellers want to be the hollow bone through which the divine current pours, but all too often our own stuff gets in the way.  Service is a means of seeing beyond ourselves and asking ourselves in any given situation: ‘what would love do now?’ If the Divine were fully present in my being, how would love respond to this given circumstance? When we focus upon being the Divine servant, it takes the focus ..read more
