How would you recommend removing the rebar and left over concrete to my concrete garage door? I’m trying to keep the wall flushed. I was thinking of using a chisel and hammer to get rid of the concrete then a saw for the bar but is there a more effective/ safe way. What other ppe should I be using with the saw also? I haven’t used a saw before but seen it used, besides for cutting food submitted by /u/moonandsun78 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Self GC a new home construction. So far we're moving along - but we're at the point of needing to do insulation. I've got a quote for $20k or change to do all batts - some rockwool. I've got a quote of $33k to flash & Batt exterior walls, garage walls, rim joists, etc. What I'm curious about - Closed cell VS open Cell - Where and why? Vaulted ceilings for dining room - unvented - They have closed cell listed They have closed cell listed for a cathedral ceiling in our in-law living room They have all 2x6 exterior walls with 2.5" Closed cell + r13 rockwool They have closed cell in garage &g ..read more

Slab vs Crawl Space

We are having our footings poured this week and had been planning to build our house on a concrete slab foundation. Due to the height difference being a little greater than expected after digging for the footings, The builder told me they would need about an 8 ft wall at the highest point and that a block wall wouldn't work they'd have to do a poured wall. With all the additional cost for the fill (est $15k) He's recommending we switch to a crawl space now instead of a poured slab. I've had the slab foundation in my mind for some time now and thought that's what I was getting based on the pla ..read more

Hi everyone. I have a rookie question for you all. Missing the “bolt?” That goes in this hinge for the door I took down last year. Can I buy replacements? I’d rather not replace the entire hinges. I’d have no idea how to do that. submitted by /u/Able-Draft2912 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Floor Plans help, please

My fiancé and I are in the stages of starting to plan our home build. We have an idea what we want to build and have found some sample floor plans online, so we’d love to be able to get some ballpark estimates from builders or even an estimate for materials at the local hardware store. However we would like to make a few changes to the sample floor plan that we found, and we were told it would be around $3500CAD to receive the modified version of the floor plan. But we’re not even 100% sure if it’s the kind of house we want to build because our opinion might change based on whatever estimate ..read more

Strategies for an Extensible Home?

I ask this question as a layman thinking about very distant plans. Please school me. My question is this: If you were to optimize a house for future extensions, what would you do? What strategies would you employ in the design, construction, or any other aspect of such a house? I am considering the feasibility of starting with a very small house and building onto it over my life as I can afford to do so. I would appreciate some wisdom. submitted by /u/Expensive_Tailor_293 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

NY State codes requiring make up air?

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone could help me out or point me in the right direction because I'm drowning in regulations. The background is that we had a new home constructed in 2022 which is extremely tight. It was provided with a 1 to 1 ERV system but no make up air. We have 3 100cfm bathroom fans and a 1200cfm stove hood with no way to draw in fresh air except through the chimney. Obviously when we have a fire going it sucks the smoke out of the chimney and fills our house which has led to the chimney being basically unusable. The builder basically says tough luck, we built it to code ..read more
