Hi all. Just wonder if there is a big advantage to using icf over block wall? If you are building with blocks, how big is the cavity on new builds now? submitted by /u/jlaf99 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How much did your whole project cost?

Hi all, I know this could be interpreted as a pretty open-ended question as there’s so many variables (where in the UK you live, build type, quality of finish, etc). I just wondered if anyone would have a fairly good idea/breakdown of what they spent to build their own home from start to finish? I’m an electrician by trade and consider myself to have reasonably good knowledge of the whole process involved but I’ve tried and tried to find examples of what people have actually spent as I’m trying to gauge what kind of ball park figure I’d be looking at to build our own place. Ideally it would b ..read more

Buying a small house outright or building a nicer one with a plot of land ?

Between cash purchasing a house for £400k ( in a nearby area ) or purchasing a 250k plot, spending the first 150k on the build and likely getting a small mortgage to finish it off. Keep in mind the plot of land is the best spot in the village and the house would likely be valued at between 750-900k ( all surrounding houses are 800K +) I'm interested to hear people opinions on this. Hey guys! Me and my fiancée are getting married this July and we will be moving in with my parents while we build our savings back up after the cost of my partners spouse visa takes time to settle. We are eager to become homeowners in the next 2-3 years and with the savings we have we believe this is realistic. Her job will be in computer science and we know this will pay her pretty well, along with my income of course. Being from America, she knows many people, including family members who have built their own properties. My sister in law has a beautiful house that she built right before the ..read more

Hi all, not exactly the self build question but.. Hoping for some advice. We are self building and finally in the stage where we are going for tender in the coming weeks. We have been given mortgage approval in principal however I am 6 months into my current 'new' job which is really not for me and is effecting my mental health. I've been looking at new jobs and have a few interviews lined up. Has anyone moved jobs during a self build? surely its happened before - i'll be getting more money that im on now. I was hoping that maybe if I moved after we got the first draw down with the house the ..read more

Self Build - Ideas and Plans (Advise for the start of a project)

I am at the very start of my self build process. I have the land secured in my name already. I have brainstormed a very basic idea and floor plan but without being construction savvy i have no idea if its even feasible. It is not overly complicated or big but its significantly better than houses in my local area and would fit nicely within the land i have but at the moment it all feels very far away. I am going to start looking at the finance side of things over the next few week (Mortgage / Loans / help to build etc) However i feel a little lost on the design and build part of the process.
