Hello, I just came across this forum and hoping someone may be able to provide (or point me in the right direction to) information on my grandfather (George Aberdein) and his older brother (David Aberdein) who both served in World War 1. I already have some information on them. George Aberdein (private #1183?) came back from the war. Unfortunately his brother, David (private #1167), was killed in action on October 3rd, 1915. David is buried in the Mailly-Maillet Communal Cemetery Extension in northern France. Noting that our surname spelling was recorded as Aberdeen (not Aberdein). I'm particu ..read more

Hello, I have been doing research on my great great grandfather and had a few questions and might have made mistakes in understanding it so would like to ask for some help. A few things on the Casualty Form I questioned are 14 October 1917, I cant tell which hospitals he was admitted to. 28 October 1917 "Embarked AT Newhaven for England", am I wrong in thinking Newhaven is where they would arrive? Same day "Admitted 2/1 Southern General Hospital", am I safe to assume thats just 1 Southern Gen Hosp?  19 March 1918 "forfeits 2 days pay" and then I cant tell what it says. On the Promotions a ..read more

My grandfather was Gunner R G Clark. He joined the Warwickshire RHA in 1912 and trained in Aldershot before going to France to join the 29th Division B.E.F. I am in the process of transcribing his diaries, written during 1917 and 1918. They give chilling details of life on the Front. He was mainly involved with transporting supplies and ammunition and moving artillery. He told me he was the lead horseman of the 3 pair team. He was allowed leave in September 1917 to return home to marry my grandmother, Harriet (Hetty) Crocker. He survived the Great War, though many of his chums did not. He retu ..read more

If a man was a member of the Special Reserve or special reserve of officers in the pre-war era, would he have been demobbed and discharged in early 1919 with all the war service only men or would he have to continue to serve well into 1919 and 1920 or was it just a select few that were kept behind? for example i have found 2 officers one was Brigadier James Pendlebury a member of the officers reserve since 1912 and was mobilized in August 1914, sent overseas in September 1914 and were "released" in May 1920, The other is Arthur Anderson, a 2nd Lieutenant in t ..read more

Folks I'm after a potted version of the battalion's activities on this day, which I can use to introduce a talk I'm giving on 27 Oct this year. I know they had 93 dead, of the 442 recorded by CWGC for that day, forming the highest casualties of the day. TIA John ..read more

I'm putting together a manuscript on numbering in the Special (and where applicable) Extra Reserve battalions of the British Army's sixty-nine infantry regiments and I need to call in some additional expertise. The majority of these battalions, when formed in 1908, continued with the number series that had been use by their militia forebears, and continued plodding along quite merrily until the First World War began. All battalions saw a huge influx in August and September 1914 but thereafter the numbers dwindle and, for most of the battalions, appear to peter out by the end of the year. It's ..read more
