Hello all, I was wondering if there was a consensus on the theory of the ~262-foot probable U-Boat that was located off Argentina a few years ago. Personally, I think it's U-857, which was in the North Atlantic in late April, may have had time to flee South after the news of German surrender, like U-977 and U-530. The length is close as well. Curious to hear your thoughts ..read more

Hi! I'm researching some events after the capitulation in may 1945. When a Norwegian veteran warship "Tordenskjold" – called Nymphe and used as anti-air by the germans - crashed to shore 17th of May near Svolvær in Lofoten, a submarine and it's crew were among the germans. I know the name of some of the crew: Oberleutnant z.see: Helmut Köchter A local historian has a name from the crew signed "Möhlmann", that he claims was the captain of this submarine. The submarine crew came from Narvik, and were sent to Svolvær before they were supposed to be transfered to a captive camp Bogen the 17th ..read more

While reading "Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days" by Karl Doenitz I ran across the following extract taken from an "Instructional Handbook" issued to the American Air Force during the War: If a U-boat sinks two 6,000 ton ships and one 3,000 ton tanker, here is a typical list of the sort of losses we should incur: 42 tanks, 8 6-inch howitzers, 88 25-pounder guns, 40 40mm guns, 24 armored patrol vehicles, 50 Bren guns or self-propelled gun mounts, 5,120 ton of munitions, 600 rides, 428 tons of tank accessories, 2000 tons of rations and 1000 drums of petrol Just think of what we could have don ..read more

A long time away like 20 odd years! Good day nice to be back. On a totally different site I have inadvertently got into a spat about cruisers and submarines. To my knowledge there has never been an episode of a WWII cruiser sinking an axis submarine through depth charging. For a start I am not aware of any cruiser carrying them or fitted with asdic/sonar. On the surface an incident may have happened but we are talking about submerged subs here. It didn't help that co-pilot said and quoted five examples, which I proved to be total rubbish. One example given was the date the cruiser was torpe ..read more
