I’ve read a lot more books lately than I’ve listed here, but these are the memorable books I want to share: Memorable Books #1: Little Fires Everywhere (2017) by Celeste Ng I’m not going to lie. The only reason I picked this one up was because the author’s name appeared in the New York Times crossword on October 27. The clue was: Author of Little Fires Everywhere. The answer had 9 letters. And I needed all the crosses to get the answer. See: Title Image, 19 Across (no copyright infringement is intended) If you’re an author and you are a clue in the NYT crossword, then I need to know about you ..read more

Climate Change Name: Hurriquake

The latest climate change name: Hurriquake. It happened yesterday in Southern California. Hurricane Hilary coincided with a 5.1 earthquake. Note: earthquakes aren’t caused by climate change. But I imagine people in California might have good reason to wonder if they are. In any case, the term counts as a linguistic blend. Credit where credit is due: In 2004 Ed Sutt patented the design of a nail to be used in buildings that could better withstand the forces of both hurricanes and earthquakes. See title image (no copyright infringement is intended). I now add this term to the list that I started ..read more

The Downside of Generative AI

The downside of Generative AI involves the danger of copyright infringement. And the threat to the livelihoods of many, if not all, working visual artists and writers. If you need to refresh your memory about Generative AI and/or copyrights, see: A Few Things To Know About AI We distinguish first between copyrighted images and copyrighted texts. The Downside: Infringement of Copyrighted Images Two current lawsuits involve copyright infringement of images. In both cases Stability AI is the defendant. In one case Getty Images is the plaintiff. And the other is a class-action lawsuit on behalf of ..read more

A few things to know about AI. Since the topic is everywhere these days, I want to understand it. Writing about a topic helps me think through it. I hope that reading about the topic will help you think through it along with me. The July 14 issue of Science magazine inspired this blog. The title image is the slightly creased cover of my copy of the issue. Science is the only magazine I read in print. A Few Things to Know About AI First, AI is Artificial Intelligence. Second, it also goes by the name Generative AI. It can generate content that previously only humans could produce. It does so by ..read more

English in Romanian Media – Observations

English in Romanian Media is hardly a new topic. The question isn’t whether English is finding its way into Romanian. The question is: How pervasive is the phenomenon? If you’re not paying attention, you might not notice a lot. However, over these past few days, I decided to pay attention, and I’m struck by how much English pervades Romanian. The title image caught my eye. It’s advertising a kindergarten and an after school program where instruction is in German. The Romanian word for kindergarten is gradiniță. But if you’re teaching în limba germană ‘in the German language’ why not use the Ge ..read more

The Black Sea – Three Points of View

The Black Sea has been on my mind for the past few days. Odd, perhaps. Or maybe not so odd because I’m in Romania. A brutal war rages just beyond Romania’s northeastern border. Geography matters. As you see, six countries surround the Black Sea: Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, and Georgia. The uncolored space between Romania and Ukraine is Moldova. It is landlocked. (Title image courtesy of Mappr. No copyright infringement is intended.) So, six points of view should come into play here. However, I can only think of three: Turkey, Romania, and Ukraine. The Black Sea and the Ottoman ..read more

Prince of Transylvania – and Now a King

If you guessed that the Prince of Transylvania is now Charles III of England, you’re right! And you might have guess it from looking at the title image. (Courtesy of Quora, no copyright infringement intended.) If the genealogists are right, the most (in)famous Romanian of all time, namely Vlad Țepeș aka Vlad the Impaler (1431-1476), is the grandfather of the new British king – 16 times removed. Prince of Transylvania This past weekend the press in Romania offered non-stop coverage of the coronation of King Charles. He is already a well-known figure in Romania because he has a 20+-year history ..read more

Back in Bucharest – And Happy About It!

After a three year absence (Drat you, Pandemic!) I’m back in Bucharest. I didn’t know what to expect after such a long time away. But after only a day or two I realized I still love it! Back in Bucharest The title image tells a story. The phrase Ca la noi la nimeni is short and sweet in Romanian but hard to translate as succinctly. Literally it’s: “Like us here is like no one else.” More colloquially: “Nobody does it like we do.” If someone gets caught up in some god-awful bureaucratic mess, they’re likely to mutter “Ca la noi la nimeni.” The phrase usually has a negative tone, as in “We sure ..read more

This month Money for Nothing received an Indie Reader Discover Award for 2022. It’s a werepanther shapeshifter story. And it won in the category Paranormal. Fun! What did the judges say? “Julie Tetel Andresen’s second installment of the Shapeshifter Series, Money for Nothing, is a truly tantalizing murder mystery and fantasy novel complemented with a bit of romance. The work is as charming as it is entertaining, as it has all the elements of great storytelling – interesting characters, a fast-paced plot, and a satisfying resolution.” I’ll take it! I’m doubly happy about the award because the t ..read more

Yaroslav the Wise – Why He Matters

Yaroslav the Wise (c.978-20 – 1054) was Grand Prince of Kyiv from 1019 until his death. He married Ingegerd Olofsdotter, the daughter of Olaf Eriksson, King of Sweden. Yaroslav’s father was Volodymyr. He, among other things, brought Christianity to his realm (see map, below). Yaroslav’s grandfather was Sviatoslav. He is known to history as the “last Viking.” The Cathdral of St. Sophia, Kyiv Yaroslav the Wise became known to me while reading The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine by Serhii Plokhy. (See title image.) I’m still in the midst of reading this fascinating book. But one paragraph ..read more
