Uncle Sammy (March & Two Step) 1904..Abe Holzmann

This well written patriotic march by Holzmann is one I'd not heard before. The piano score is in F but in order to fit the bass solos to the banjo, I've arranged it in C. I've included a cylinder recording by the Edison Band together with my MP3 and score, the latter two to be added to the library later ..read more

Hungarian Rag (1913)...Julius Lenzberg

This is the fifth composition by Lenzberg that I've arranged to date. As with the others, it's very well written and takes its name from the fact that he has woven into it parts of Liszt's 2nd. Hungarian Rhapsody, in particular measures 67 to 72. My suggested fingering does lean towards the melodic style and it's how I play it.  I've combined the piano LH and RH parts and changed around the octaves and I've used the LH part as the finale. The score and MP3 are included to be added to the library later...Steve ..read more

American tuning

Hello, I’m interested in learning to read A tuning (American) and I would appreciate any tips and tricks you have to offer.  Are there any tutors in the library that anyone particularly recommends?  Also, what is the preference for using a banjo in “c” and transposing, versus having a separate banjo tuned to eAEG#B?   I’m considering stringing up a separate banjo with minstrel strings for the “a” tuning, partly for the pitch and partly because I think I would learn easier on an instrument different from the one I learned “c” tuning on.  Thanks in advance!  ..read more

I've been diligently prepping for the Chris Sands course at this year's BMG Summer School and one of the pieces is Transatlantique by Tarrent Bailey Junior. Tarrent wrote the piece in 1958 and dedicated it to the American Banjo Fraternity. I've played all the parts here, but it would be great for folks to come help us play all the parts and all the other great tunes Chris has for us at the weekend. It's from the 14th to 16th June at Higham Hall in Cumbria. Details here: https://bbmg.org.uk/summer-schooL ..read more

The composer of this one off rag came from Fresno in California, other than that, nothing else is known about him. It's one of the best rags I've come across for some time and is well worth a listen and play. I've Photo-shopped the title page to make it more amenable to today's sensibilities and I've lowered bars 87-94 and 103-114 by an octave. The score and MP3 are included to be added to the library later...Steve ..read more

I could find no information about the composer of this very well written slow drag. The notes on the title page indicates that it was available as a banjo solo but I've never come across it in the past. The piano score was written in C/F but I find it suits the banjo better in F/Bb. I've mixed and matched the piano RH and LH parts in particular in the second part and trio. The score and MP3 are included to be added to thew library later...Steve ..read more

Hi everyone! Sorry if this topic has been beat to death.  I'm new to the website, and to classic style banjo. A little about myself, and what I know: I play guitar, banjo, fiddle, and tin whistle. I've played guitar, and clawhammer banjo since my late teens, and fiddle for 1.5 years. I have a Deering Vega Senator, and a Goldtone AC-1 strung with nylgut.  I play 2 finger style also, and a little bit of 3 finger stuff. Being a fingerpicker on guitar I have some experience. I can read notation, and tablature. I've been going through a couple of Rob Mackillops Mel Bay publications in t ..read more
