I was doing a little “Zillow Surfing” (or “Zillow Scrolling?”), having fun imagining life near the Jersey Shore, and as I was scrolling through the collection of interior shots for a particular house, I came across this: What is this surrealist home furnishing? Odd real estate photo seen on Zillow. What is that thing? I’m really quite intrigued by this. I’m assuming this is a case of the realtor making a digital manipulation to cover something up, but in this case, whatever they’re covering up is the focal point of the picture – the open door to the laundry room is kind of an afterthought. I was walking down Main Street in Beacon, NY, when I noticed these surrealist hand sculptures with eyeballs embedded in the palms of each … it’s certainly an attention-grabber. This was in the front window of the Pandorica Restaurant, and checking out their website, it explains that they are “… the only Doctor Who themed restaurant on the east coast with a decor that is not over the top, but filled with subtle references to our favorite show.” I’m familiar with the show, but never really got around to watching it, so I would ask you Dr. Who fans out there, are the hands with eyeballs something ..read more

Thrift Store Surrealism with a nod to Salvador Dali

I saw this painting when I was visiting the Antique Emporium of Asbury Park, and was immediately attracted to it with its surrealist imagery. We’ve got a snake and a person with an outstretched arm turning into clouds (?), a white horse tucked into bull horns above letters floating on the ocean and a digital time stamp that matches the time in a Salvador Dali-like melting clock. Pretty awesome, don’t you think? Surrealist painting by an unidentified artist at the Antiques Emporium of Asbury Park. I didn’t buy it, although I was certainly tempted, and as I’m revisiting it now, I’m getting the u ..read more

Shona Heath, looking for the wrongest colors

This is a fascinating video, serving as an introduction to the surrealism-inspired work of set designer Shona Heath, who has worked in the areas of fashion, advertising, store windows, film, and more. Throughout the interview, she shows examples of surrealist art works by artists who inspire her, including Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Dorothea Tanning, Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and more. One of my favorite parts of the video comes from her explanation of her appreciation for certain colors, always wanting to paint things blue or green that “shouldn’t be blue or green” (spoken while t ..read more

I recently took a day trip to Callicoon, NY, just to go somewhere new and explore the area. As I was walking around the town, I noticed this architecture, which made me think of M.C. Escher’s famous artwork “Relativity.” Just for fun, I decided to play around with this image, and create my own version of “Relativity” … here’s a look at what I created ..read more
