Lady Flash – Darkweb

Lady Flash release their second album but their first in almost seven years on January 11 2023. Titled どこにもいけないドア (Door To Nowhere) it features nine tracks including last years cassette single Teen In Heart/Daydream a-nation. Darkweb is the album’s closing track fusing the band’s obvious love of indiepop and post-punk. It’s not as noisy as their previous punk inspired efforts but there is a clear mix of various influences taken from across the decades. The joint vocals work well and I forgive them (just) for the indulgent guitar that rears it’s head at various points of the song ..read more

Best Bets – The Minor Leagues

Rangiora’s Best Bets revisit April’s debut album On An Unhistoric Night for their latest single the Minor Leagues. It’s an edited version of the original track shaving well over a minute from the album version making more effective and accessible as a single to these ears. Fusing garage, jangle and power pop it reminds me of “new wave”, the music that followed punk in the UK in the late 1970s, early 1980s. Yep, I remember it well! It’s backed with the original version and a new track, the melodic and ear grabbing Big Time which ironically is way too short! Get the single from here. Facebook ..read more

Delivery – Baader Meinhof

Melbourne based post-punk stroke garage rockers Delivery will be releasing their debut album Forever Giving Handshakes later this year. The album’s lead single is the extremely addictive song Baader Meinhof that delivers (ho ho) a mix of synth-pop, Kosmische Musik and garage rock. It sounds a bit like Stereolab if they were a punk band! Forever Giving Handshakes is out on November 11 2022 and is available to pre-order now. The album comes in two versions. One is on cassette with 14 extra demo tracks via Anti Fade Records (AUS) whilst the other is available on vinyl which is available via Feel ..read more

Spunsugar – (You Never) Turn Around Spunsugar’s new single did not appear on their recent Drive-Through Chapel long-player. It is, however, the final part of a trilogy which includes two tracks from the aforementioned album Time Enough at Last and Dial Up Tone. The theme of the three songs deals with “being in a relationship with a person who’s emotionally unavailable”. It’s the band’s poppiest moment so far and could well be their best to date too as their telltale shoegaze influenced sound collides with some fine programmed beats. (You Never) Turn Around is out now digitally via Adrian Re ..read more

Sometimes I am just in the mood for three chords coupled with some noise and this compilation, featuring female led bands, currently fit’s the bill. The album gets off to a rip-roaring start with the Japanese punk band Floppy-Pinkies with Thank You For The World which is the title track from their 2018 EP. Staying in Japan Kung-Fu Girl deliver a noisy take on indiepop with their a track from their debut release earlier this year in the shape of Rabuka. The good stuff keeps coming with the garage sounds of Janelles with their contribution Ranço and the surf-punk of Hayley and The Crushers remi ..read more

Pop Crimes – Up To The Moon

Paris based Pop Crimes have a new single out. Up To The Moon is a warm indiepop tune that also has 1960s garage and psychedelia characteristics woven throughout. It’s gentle but hypnotic with it and the listener is soon fully absorbed finally being released as the song came to its end. Compiling a mixtape? Then Up To The Moon certainly warrants inclusion. Up To The Moon, which is backed with There Were Smiles, is out now on 7″ vinyl and digital formats jointly via Howlin Banana Records and Safe In The Rain Records. Facebook ..read more
