Cherry Pickin’s January 2024
Westminster Unitarian Church

Cherry Pickin’s January 2024 I’m not opposed to making New Year’s Resolutions – sometimes they help us choose a new and good pathway ahead. But, a more valuable spiritual project at the new year – which I heartily recommend – is to count your blessings. Sometimes when the world is chaotic and frightening – when so many people are facing unspeakably difficult challenges and tragedies – it can feel selfish to remember blessings. Cherry Pickin’s – December 2023
Westminster Unitarian Church

Cherry Pickin’s – December 2023 Each December I share a similar message with the congregation I’m serving, a message that acknowledges how much each person is trying to manage during this month – and this season. We feel the tug of Hope and Expectation in both spiritually and practically challenging ways.  And, Memory and Grief arise with force, needing time and attention, If we’re lucky, we find moments of quiet joy and peace along the way as well. But, the challenging highs and lows are more frequent, and more common, for many.   Take care of yourselves, my dear ones. This can ..read more

Cherry Pickin’s September 2023

Cherry Pickin’s 2023 I had the good fortune to find myself commuting behind a student driver recently – likely one of their first tentative treks behind the wheel. I could feel the mix of anxiety and awareness that was emanating from the other car during the short time we traveled together. It was ‘good fortune’ because it reminded me of the benefits of cultivating a ‘‘beginner’s mind’’ or shoshin as it’s known in Zen Buddhism. Whether driving on Main St. or traveling the Noble Eightfold Path, these guideposts are worth noticing:   Slow down. Listen to mentors. Concentrate. Be courageous ..read more
