Why is it that all of Germany was so bad at fighting the Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War(1618-1648 AD) despite the Swedish forces always being vastly outnumbered and having no help from other countries? As for Germany, they got support from the Spanish Empire. Very few Swedes died in the Thirty Years' War while the Germans never scored victories in that war ..read more

Crowns - assorted thoughts on.

Odd when you come to think of it, crowns. But ever so important to some and the designs are so varied. Possibly all peoples have - or have had - crowned heads and the designs unique to each culture..... most of my cards with assorted kings are wearing the wrong ones. And oh how I long for the crackers of old which had many different paper crowns not just a silly ring of tissue. Do you think Queen Vic designed that diddy little job herself...... for jaunty day wear, I assume ..read more

How come that the knights such as the Templar Knights were so weak against the Mamluk Warriors especially in melee combat? What do you think of the fact that the Templar Knights never won battles against the Mamluks despite the fact that the Mamluks were always heavily outnumbered by the Templar Knights? What do you think of the fact that the Templar Knights never killed Mamluks in battles despite the fact that the Mamluks were heavily outnumbered by the Templar Knights? Is it because ..read more

Currently enthralled by the BBC4 prog on the Ottoman Empire with its thoughtful weight given to the  ongoing  considerable impact in many areas, it also gives rise to wondering about similar legacies, and me, in particular relating to the the Commonwealth. If nothing else its formation has probably been the less painful  wihdrawal following the decline of the British Empire - or does that make hackles rise here? Any thoughts on this Res Hist? There have been, after all quite a few Empires we ..read more

How did plaid kilts become feminine clothing?

Why did people adopt the plaid skirt with folded knife pleats for females even though it was invented and originally worn by Scottish males? Which culture and country did these skirts come from and who invented these skirts? Or are the Celtic males who wore them homosexual? This is not meant to be an offensive racist question. I am just curious. I heard some people say that the Celtic males who wore those plaid kilted skirts were actually female in personality. Is this true? I mean now in the ..read more

Peace, but for how long?

Since the end of WWll, our world has experienced an era of decresead war activity. In most parts of the world, people have learned to live without war.  But with wars once again taking place on European soil and tensions only increasing on other continents - it is natural to ask: how long is this peace, that we all got used to, going to last?  This is also not the first time in history we see a large percentage of human population getting used to peace. But after those periods, it usually ..read more
