Hi all,
I service my own life jackets and pretty much every year i find i am replacing the CO2 canisters - i have 3 inflatable jackets.
Usually after a few months the new canisters get surface corrosion on them.
The service checklist for my life jackets say replace the cannisters with any sign of corrosion.
Are there any tips on how to make these cannisters last longer ?
Admittedly i do leave them stored in the boat, they don't get wet per se but i guess ambient humidity does the job ? And i do fish primarily salt water,,
I thought about giving the outer of the cannister a spray with some sor ..read more

Sorry mate for some reason I thought Sebb posted that, should’ve paid more attention! Sounds like you already have most of the bases covered. The other points where a sounder with maps works well is to return to the same accurate location e.g. good patch of squid, dropped fishing rod, etc. but I assume there are map apps on the phone that also do this. Possibly worth also considering a sounder (depends on the model) might be cheaper than a replacing a phone dropped overboard.
You're all good mate!
Definately the greater accuracy of the sounder will be advantageous over the phone. I think too ..read more

Being on kayak, we're not that mobile as compared to boats.
For me, anything I see on the sounder is good enough spot to make a cast. Whether be fish marks, drop offs, reefs, etc.
Read the drift direction, position the kayak, and cast.
Also pay attention to cast "upstream" or down, watch where the slack is, etc.
For me, drifting is good for when casting lures or squid jig. Bait fishing is easier when anchored.
Your image 3 is a good setup. Depends on the situation, I do similar setup.

Hey Tim,
Apprectiate the reply mate!
I think you've summed up the advantages to a sounder pretty well there.
Optimizing the way I'm fishing by being able to successfully mark and relocate spots/ reef, etc, and punching out straight there will be a big advantage. However I am already doing that via google maps semi-successfully for kgw sandy holes / more productive spots, and a few snapper marks.
I'm uncertain how much more a sounder would support this..
Depth wise I'm fortunate enough to be out there enough to kinda eye-ball the depth with landmarks, or how far out I am from say x marker.

Hi Sebb, that rod set up looks like it will work. You can always adjust the left hand rod to give yourself more spread if required.
I don’t often use my sounder for finding schools of fish, I use it for finding depth and what is on the bottom, e.g where sand meets reef edge in 4m for snapper. Over time as you find good terrain and save the gps marks it can then reduce the time spent at the start of a session trying to find where to fish. Having marks of good areas is more important for fish like snapper whereas for squid I just go to a general area where the depth and bottom type (weed beds) l ..read more

Hey all,
Seeking advise and recommendations from the killer brain trust here on in support of brainstorming the best setup running two rods on Hobie Compass.
Aim Rod Setup
Aiming to have two rods working on the drift, both lines taught running plastics / squid jig in a practical way. + What can I expect from a sounder?
Brainstorming Rod Setup
This was the outcome of me brainstorming over the long weekend.
Right handed, rod in-hand follows the angle of the left rod holder.
Sleeper faces frontwards, clears kayak and has lure tight on the drift.
Both rods keep the top left corner free whi ..read more

They're not easy catch.
Never specifically in Hastings, but i did spend time hunting them, ages ago.
Usually Aug/Sept, spend the afternoon looking for mullet during tide change, put into bucket, and use them as live bait when its dark and slack tide.
Hooked like 5 times, but only landed once.
