Why Star Ocean The Second Story Feels Like The Odd One Out

*Spoilers for the Star Ocean Series* Unlike all the other Star Ocean games which are a sci-fi/Fantasy hybrid with themes around technology affecting underdeveloped worlds, Star Ocean The Second Story is more of an isekai that just happens to have one of the characters being from outer space. Unlike the other games, Second Story doesn’t explore much in regards to sci-fi concepts, sure Rena’s backstory is kind of a Sci-Fi concept but at the same time it kinda isn’t because it doesn’t really influence anything. I mean it’s not like Rena is a synthetic lifeform or anything like Relia is in 5, she ..read more

Growlanser: Heritage Of War Review

It sucks that the only game in the Growlanser series to make it to PAL territories was the fifth game but at least the story of Heritage Of War appears to be completely standalone, requiring no knowledge of the previous games in the series, so I was able to dive straight in. Now I have seen gameplay of previous entries before and it seems somewhat different from what Heritage Of War has to offer, however I am unable to judge which has the better combat system, all I will say is that Growlanser Heritage Of War is best described as being an enjoyable mess. The game has a lot of great moments fo ..read more

Trials Of Mana Review

I remember playing a bit of the original Seiken Densetsu 3 and it was a colossal improvement from its predecessor, Secret Of Mana. The game still shows signs of age however and while it definitely aged better than Secret Of Mana, it would certainly benefit from a remake. Fortunately such a thing now exists and it is known as Trials Of Mana. For the record, I will only be covering the remake of this game, not the original so if you want to play the original game, don’t expect the same experience as the one from the remake as they play very differently. For those of you who are unfamiliar with ..read more

Grandia II Narrative Analysis – Unraveling The Sins And Virtues Of Humanity *Spoilers*

Spoilers For Grandia II!!! Now it’s no secret that I absolutely adore Grandia 2. I love its battle system, its soundtrack and the vibrant color scheme which gives the game a lighthearted tone but the best part about Grandia 2 to me is the story. Now I have explained why the story of Grandia 2 is so great in my review but for the sake of spoilers, I didn’t really delve deep into the context of the actual story. Now I want to make it clear that I am not really all that big into narrative driven media. While I don’t mind the narrative experience and am always open to experiencing a story, narrat ..read more

Resonance Of Fate Review

I remember being mildly interested when I first saw this game in a magazine, only to find out that it had the SEGA logo on the front of the box, causing my interest to disappear in an instant. Fast forward many years later after having experienced countless tri-Ace games and enjoying them, I eventually found out that Resonance Of Fate was not only developed by tri-Ace but it was also directed by the same person who directed my favorite game of all time, what could possibly go wrong? When I heard that a PC port of the game was on the horizon and that it was going to be self-published by tri-A ..read more

YS VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana Review

It pains me to admit that I never really got into the YS series back in the day. The whole idea of playing as a single character in an action RPG with overly simplified combat seemed a bit too archaic for me. Now I realize that the YS series is one of the pioneers of the action RPG genre and truth be told, I did want to give the series a chance but I just never knew where to start. It wasn’t until the release of YS VIII Lacrimosa Of Dana, that I decided to give the series a try. It appears that YS VIII opted to follow in the footsteps of more modern action RPG’s such as the Tales and Star Oce ..read more

Ar Nosurge: Ode To An Unborn Star Review

Being of the last JRPG’s to be released on the Playstation 3, Ar Nosurge is one of the many games that fell off the radar due to being released at the latter end of a console generation. To make matters worse, Ar Nosurge just happens to be part of the Ar Tonelico series despite not being named Ar Tonelico which could have also been part of the reason many forgot about its existence. While the Ar Tonelico series has a cult following, Ar Nosurge barely has a following at all, in fact it is actually the sequel to a game titled Ciel Nosurge, a game that was never released outside Japan which caus ..read more
