It gives me great pleasure to introduce everyone to the very first guest blog on Perennial Underachievers! I hope to feature more of these whenever I can, and please do send me stuff if anyone out there wants to write tactical pieces, match reviews, player analysis or anything United related. This first guest article might inspire a few of you out there and I hope it does! I’m still planning on a monthly blog of my own, with the review for August due out on the 31st (it has been a pretty quiet few weeks so far…) For this first guest piece, we have a tactical look back at the fantastic 1-0 win ..read more

United in Review – July 2021
Perennial Underachievers

Welcome! This is the first of a new format for Perennial Underachievers. The idea is that rather than produce individual weekly match reports, I will aim instead to put together a monthly review commenting on all things related to United. Ideally I would supplement this with one-off opinion pieces, or contructions from others, but we will start with the ‘United in Review’ monthly blog. These monthly reflections will contain a mix of match analysis, result analysis and performance analysis but I also want to use it as an opportunity to comment on other matters connected to the club, and ultimat ..read more

Dundee United – Season 2021/22 Preview
Perennial Underachievers

Hello! On Tuesday afternoon I sat in front of the WordPress portal/dashboard for what felt like an eternity. I was having a bit of an existential crisis because for weeks, WordPress had been emailing me with reminders that the Perennial Underachievers domain name, site and all the contents, had to be either renewed or removed. Like any other self respecting man, I ignored the problem for as long as I could in the hope it would go away without me needing to do anything. It didn’t, and Tuesday was the deadline… Hovering over the ‘delete all content’ button, I swung between having the confidence ..read more

January Window – 2021
Perennial Underachievers

This is going to be a short one… The aim of this post (and I try to have a similar one each window), is to keep a ‘live’ view on the United squad. It has some detail on our contracts and it will be updated with any official club news or signings. I full expect this month to be incredibly quiet on the signing front, and it is obvious that the club is trying to cut costs, rather than add any. So, the only real activity might be players departing, either on a free transfer, or if an asset like Siegrist is sold to help with our cash flow. On forums and social media pages, people often ask about th ..read more

Dundee United – The State of Play 2020

This has been a blog post started, stopped, started again and revisited many, many times over in recent weeks. Although I ended my regular match reviews a number of months ago, it remains the case that I want to produce something United related every so often. It allows an opportunity for me to release some football related ramblings (and relieve the pressure built up in my overly analytical brain), but it also means that people didn’t forget about me! Also, I’ve accidentally paid for the website for another year due to me not cancelling my Direct Debit, so I need to at least get my money’s wo ..read more

A Not Siggi Jonsson Farewell
Perennial Underachievers
by Siggi Jonsson

I’ve spent quite a bit of time these last few weeks trying to compose a farewell blog post. It has been something on my mind for a while now and although I tried my best to get off to a strong start this season, I think now is the time to call it a day. The main reason? Time. The truth is I am making this announcement because of time – and the lack of it. During lockdown we all had the opportunity to focus on the things we love and it gave me the chance to plan and prepare for the new season. I spent hours upon hours tinkering with new images, graphics and layouts. I thought about different fo ..read more

Ross County vs Dundee United – Matchday Four
Perennial Underachievers

Well, here we are again. It has been a busy week of football for United and as we approach match four we can be pretty satisfied with our results so far. The midweek defeat against Hibs was a disappointing result in isolation but once again the performance contained some of the basic elements we are now witnessing under Micky Mellon – hard work, determination and a high level of physicality. I think that I sometimes forget that we were only recently toiling in the Championship. Football is such a reactive sport that 90 minutes can skew your view on how things are progressing. Feeling disappoi ..read more

Dundee United vs Hibs – Matchday Three

Apologies but this blog might be a tad shorter than usual. With such a quick turnover between games and with this being a Tuesday night fixture it puts a bit of pressure on my own time. Only having a couple of days between matches also means a lack of club news and I certainly do not waste any time speaking about the idiotic behaviour of certain footballers at other teams, so expect a slightly condensed review. One benefit of having another game so soon after the last one is that the momentum this early in the season doesn’t slip. We were all lifted massively by the victory on Saturday and in ..read more

Motherwell vs Dundee United – Matchday Two

Before we begin… On Thursday evening the club launched this season’s away kit – manufactured by Macron. For weeks people had been dropping hints that the new away shirt might be purple and that we would use this as an opportunity to establish a relationship with Alzheimer Scotland. For once, rumours about Dundee United turned out to be true… As someone who has had direct experience of this truly awful disease I must applaud the club with this new partnership. Anything to raise awareness or money to help people affected by Alzheimer’s gets a huge thumbs up from me. If you want to do a bit of f ..read more

SPFL votes, more SPFL votes, dodgy emails, leaked WhatsApp messages, court cases, arbitrations and 6954 club statements. With all of that out of the way… We are finally here and the day is upon us. We. Are. Back Are we all prepared? Well, we’ve had nearly five months of sitting about so I hope so! This continues to be the strangest of times and we are all desperately missing our normal matchday experience but it is impossible not to get excited about the start of a new season, especially one that sees us return to the Premiership. Feels good saying that, doesn’t it? I’ll say it again…Premiers ..read more
