The first thing that comes to mind when many think of the Rolex Day-Date, is the many U.S. Presidents who have worn the watch. I mean, the model’s bracelet is commonly known as the “President”! Many other notable people including Warren Buffett, the Dalai Lama, and even Tony Soprano have been known to wear the model as well so it’s pretty clear why having one on your wrist is modern shorthand for “I made it”. It is one of the only Rolex models that is offered solely in precious metals and while most have traditionally colored dials such as champagne, silver, white, and black, Rolex has occasi ..read more

Limited and commemorative edition watches are so common these days that it’s hard to keep track of them all. Sure, they work well to attract attention and drive collectability (at least at first), but the market has quickly become oversaturated with them. Rolex is one of the few brands that rarely (if ever) produces a limited or commemorative edition watch. Some models are produced in small undisclosed quantities, and the crown has been known to release a new model for a specific anniversary here and there, but not to the same extent as many other brands. This year, seemingly out of left fiel ..read more

Vintage in a Modern Package: Rolex GMT Master II 126718GRNR

Rolex brought more than its fair share of interesting new releases to Watches & Wonders 2023, including the brand new Perpetual 1908 collection and an updated Daytona with a platinum model now featuring a display caseback. It was a more under the radar release from the Crown that really piqued my interest though. For the first time since 2018, Rolex brought yellow gold back to the GMT-Master II, and I have to say, they hit it out of the park. While the new Ref. 126718GRNR is clearly a modern watch, there are some intriguing vintage callbacks in this release that are worth discussing. Like ..read more

As large as Rolex is, the powerhouse has only a dozen or so core models, each coming with a limited number of dial variants. You might see different sizes or slightly different dial colors, but generally speaking, Rolex keeps its collections tight. They get it right with the models they offer, and those offerings satisfy their massive following of dedicated enthusiasts. For 95% of collectors, this is fantastic; the brand knows what the customer wants and delivers just that. The other 5%, however, are looking for something different. When everyone is wearing roughly the same Rolex without much ..read more

Rolex was originally a tool watch brand. Founded in 1905 by 24 year old Hans Wilsdorf, the goal of the company was to supply utilitarian watches capable of withstanding grueling conditions in hard use. Soon divers, explorers, mountaineers, swimmers, tennis players, pilots and others rushed to put Rolexes on their wrists. In 1927, Mercedes Gleitze became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, a Rolex Oyster strapped around her neck; in 1935, Sir Malcom Campbell broke the world speed record at Daytona wearing a Rolex; in 1947 Chuck Yeager sported a Rolex while breaking the sound ba ..read more

When it comes to luxury watch brands, there is Rolex, and then there is everyone else. Despite not being the most exclusive or expensive manufacturer (by a long shot), Rolex is easily the most famous name in watchmaking, and the company wields a level of fame and mainstream recognition that far exceeds any other watch brand in existence today. Universally associated with luxury and the pursuit of excellence, the Rolex name is synonymous with wristwatches, and it exists within humanity’s vernacular in the same way that the marquees of other titans of industry such as Google, Coca-Cola, and Mer ..read more

As the world’s most famous luxury watch manufacturer, Rolex is very much a known quantity within the industry. Many of the brand’s models have been around for well over half a century, and the consistency of Rolex’s designs means that there are countless collectors and enthusiasts out there who are intimately familiar with its current catalog. However, in addition to the regular, standard-production models (namely those that you can see on the brand’s website), Rolex also produces a small handful of ultra-exclusive and unapologetically luxurious watches that are not part of its regular catalo ..read more
