Dr. Yury Parra, Harlem United’s Medical Director, was recognized with the “40 Under 40 Outstanding Health Professionals” distinction award by the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF). We sat down with Dr. Parra for a Q&A about the award, her work, and her vision for community healthcare. Why do you do this work? I myself was a patient at a community health center like Harlem United’s. As newly arrived immigrants to the U.S., my family navigated healthcare through Federally Qualified Health Centers. I was the first in my family to ..read more

This means that we are in the top 10% of health centers like ours. But what does that really mean? Well, here are just a few ways we earned gold: 97% of patients are screened for HIV. Since 1988, we have been experts in HIV care, and that legacy continues today. And it’s not just because of tradition – 65% of our patients are Black, and rates of new HIV diagnose are higher in Black communities than any other racial group. HIV screening is essential fo ..read more

“The results of this new analysis come as no surprise to those of us who have been fighting to repeal this ill-conceived plan. The impact of the pharmacy benefit carve-out will be devastating. Our communities will lose access to life-saving services and medications. Their health will suffer. Progress in our fight to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic will be wiped out. Our goal of achieving health equity for all — a goal we can only reach through the work of the safety net providers who are located in the communities with the greatest needs — will become unachievable. The pharmacy benefit carve-out i ..read more
