A settlement is reportedly in the works for a massive antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA. Negotiations in House vs. NCAA could result in a revenue sharing model for the Power Four conference. According to reports from ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, each school in the Power Four would distribute 15-20 million dollars to their student athletes as part of the revenue sharing model for television deals. Florida State was offered a do-over in their lawsuit against the ACC in Florida. Judge Cooper ordered FSU to amend their complaint, giving them a major opportunity to revise or even expand their arguments in their quest to break away from the ACC’s Grant of Rights. Will FSU add points from Clemson’s complaint in their new filing? They will have to submit their amended complaint in Leon County early next week. Ashley Moody, the Attorney General in Florida, is considering backing up Florida State University in their fight with the ACC over the Grant of Rights. The specific issue that has caused Moody to act is “sovereign immunity” and whether FSU, as a state institution, can be sued. The ACC argues that FSU waived their sovereign immunity when they joined the ACC and Judge Bledsoe in North Carolina agreed. Judge Cooper in Leon County, Florida was not satisfied by the language of Florida State’s complaint against the ACC. He ruled “dismissal with leave to amend” and will give FSU seven days to amend their argument after personal jurisdiction. It’s a small victory for the ACC but the judge noted that he has not ruled against Florida State. They will have seven days to amend their complaint and then the ACC will have twenty days to respond. NIL has now gotten another step closer to becoming “pay for play” and student athletes becoming university employees. The Commonwealth of Virginia passed a new State law on Thursday morning that allows universities within VA to directly pay players through NIL. This takes third parties out of the equation and allows their universities to directly cut checks to their student athletes in exchange for marketing campaigns. Big names at running back could be set to arrive and depart from the ACC during the NCAA’s spring transfer portal window. Miami is trending strongly towards adding Oregon State transfer RB Damien Martinez. Miami coaches visited him in home on Wednesday night and he will visit Coral Gables at the end of April. Sooner or later, Florida State will find a way out of the ACC. Clemson and others could also end up leaving the conference at some point. Would the ACC look to bring new members in to replace them?
