There is an open Beta for a new 3D sculpting application being developed by Adobe called Substance Modeler. You can read more about this and sign up here. At present it is Windows only software. Interestingly it looks like this program is designed to work for both VR and desktop and uses a voxel based technology (like 3D Coat or Clayxels do) which probably means less emphasis on worrying about the... For this article I focus on how I turned an Illustrated 2D dragon into a rough base mesh using a program called Curvy 3D. I tried a few methods but this one was the easiest way to do it. I will discuss some other things I tried toward the end of the article and some workflow tips. First I used Krita to create a 2D image for this project using the brush tools. After some experimentation I decided... Source ..read more

This is a workflow I discovered for making 2D images into 3D models by creating normal maps for the 2D images and then converting the normal map into a height map. It must have some transparent space around it and the... Source ..read more

One of my recent projects to practice 3D sculpting and painting was a frog. I decided to do a 3D sculpt of a frog study I had painted using Krita. I used Curvy3D Go to make the base mesh for the sculpt and then I took it into ZBrush to do more work. I like Curvy3D go because it is easy to use for quickly blocking out 3D shapes. ZBrush does have a draw 3D mesh brush now with the balloon mask... Source ..read more

Earlier this year I sculpted this rabbit in ZBrush and then painted it using 3D Coat and Krita. It is also available on my Sketchfab page to view as a 3D model. Handpainted Jumping Rabbit by Christine on Sketchfab If you would like to see the process for the texture painting I recorded all of it for this model: First I blocked in the base colours, then I added gradients. I added basic shading to... Source ..read more

I’m currently working through texturing some 3D models I’ve made and in the process I’ve been learning a few more things about the software I use and trying some different workflow and technical approaches. At present I am using a program called 3D Coat to do the UV mapping, baking and the PBR based texture painting. I also use Krita to edit the texture maps and do additional texturing work. Baking is the process of transferring high sculpt details onto a normal map texture for a lower resolution version of the model for texture painting. I’ve made a few new videos for my YouTube channel you can watch if you are interested in this subject. 3D software can be intimidating to beginners. This article describes how I gradually overcame my fear of using 3D software and lists some 3D tools here: Solutions for making 3D art easier. My experience so far I’ve been learning Blender and 3D Coat since late 2018. I found that the learning curve was steep and for several years prior to actually learning it I was too intimidated to even try. Source ..read more

I’m still fairly new to digital 3D art, but I have learned the basics on how to add materials and create texture maps for painting 3D models digitally. Here is an Easter themed scene with one of my latest models: I wrote a blog post about the creation of this picture here. Painting in real-time on 3D models is a lot of fun to do, it is a nice reward once you have finished all the other things you... Source ..read more

Introduction For Texturing 3D Models
The Art Squirrel » 3D

This article describes more technical things than usual about the 3D workflow for texturing models. I wanted to write something that might help explain things I mention in future articles. I’ll keep it at an introductory level and I’m not going into too much detail at this stage. I hope this article will be useful, I would have liked an overview of the processes involved myself when I was learning... Source ..read more
