Signs of a Lumbar Injury Equine Owners Should Watch For

If you’ve been following me on Instagram or caught the latest blog post, then you know I got a new horse I named Freya. Unfortunately, Freya had a lumbar injury neither the previous trainers nor owner caught and treated…or at least, not that I’m aware of. I knew something was possibly wrong when I looked at her but didn’t know the extent of it until months later. Injuries in Sport Horses seem to be more common lately. I don’t know if thats because horses are being pushed too hard, broke too early, or genetics but the fact is it’s happening. I was suspicious something was wrong with Freya’s bac ..read more

Meet My New Horse – Guns Chic Starlight
The North Carolina Cowgirl
by NC Cowgirl

It’s time for me to introduce the newest horse to my herd, Guns Chic Starlight aka Freya. She’s a registered QH with cutting bloodlines and a granddaughter of the great Grays Starlight. She’s a “sorrel” mare according to her papers. However, in summertime she’s a pretty red roan with a flaxen mane and tail. WHY I BOUGHT A NEW HORSE I wasn’t in the market for a new horse. However, after Rumor unexpectedly passed away in the beginning of the year, I felt an urge to get another. I worried Gracie wouldn’t be able to handle all the riding I wanted to do with her hip being bad. So buying a new hor ..read more

Beautiful Horse Pot Holders and Oven Mitts You’ll Love
The North Carolina Cowgirl

I’m in the market for new pot holders since my current ones are disgusting and OLD. Like ancient old. They are stained, torn, burnt and ugly. I can’t wait to get new ones in the mail and trash these old ones. It’s embarrassing any time I have people over and have to pull them out. They’ve got to go. LOL Since I’m already searching and shopping for a new set, I wanted to share what I’m finding with you. Who knows, you might see these horsey pot holders and want new ones yourself. I’m personally loving tall of these and having a hard time just choosing one to buy. I like the idea of getting the ..read more

My love for riding horses in the mountains is now expanding to a love for camping in the mountains at High Country Horse Camp. For those that have been long time followers of the blog, you know I LOVE trail riding at Mt. Rogers in Virginia. Normally when I visit I would stay with friends, but this year I bought a new LQ trailer and have got back into camping. I’ve already stayed a couple times at High Country Horse Camp and loved each stay. The first time I went with a friend and the second time I went alone. Both stays were wonderful and peaceful thanks to the hospitality of the owner Pete ..read more

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of trail riding with my horses because one of my goals this year is to ride more. Not just throw on a saddle and ride but go places to ride. I love trail riding and being in nature. It’s calming and relaxing for me. One of the places I’ve visited this year is the equestrian trails Raven Rock State Park. RAVEN ROCK BRIDLE TRAIL PARKING Raven Rock is located in Lillington, NC. If you’re going here specifically to ride, then you wouldn’t go in the main entrance. Instead, you would need to go around the park to the Equestrian parking area located at 1590 River Rd. F ..read more

Magnolia Hill – Great Place for Trail Riding Barefoot Horses
The North Carolina Cowgirl

I started to do more trail riding after I stopped barrel racing. A friend of mine took me to this place called Magnolia Hill last year and I loved it. I love the trails, I love the scenery, and I love that it is a place specifically for equestrians. Since then I’ve been back multiple times and each time is still just as great as the first. Not to mention, I don’t have to worry about shoes on my horses or boots since they are barefoot. LOCATION Magnolia Hill is part of what is called the North Country at Walthour-Moss Foundation located in Southern Pines, NC. There are 3 main areas to ride ..read more

Why I Love Scoot Boots
The North Carolina Cowgirl

A few years ago I decided to stop shoeing my horses and let them stay barefoot. Considering how much I love trail riding, I knew Rumor and Gracie would need hoof boots to protect their feet on rough terrain. I found out about Scoot boots after searching hoof boot groups on Facebook and seeing what boots everyone liked. I’ve now been using them for a few years and wanted to share my thoughts on them. Picture curtesy of Stacy Pratt Pros of Scoot Boots Lightweight & Flexible Plenty of vents for water/mud to flow through and out Stay on in deep mud Good grip on the bottom for slippery mud or ..read more

The Best Treeless Saddle
The North Carolina Cowgirl

Around this time last year, I bought my 1st “expensive” treeless saddle. It’s a Horse Tack World Circle Y barrel saddle. I say it’s my first expensive treeless saddle because I had bought a cheap Hilason treeless first. Needless to say, that ended up being a worthless purchase for many reasons. After looking at different treeless brands, I decided to stick with Circle Y. Every saddle I’ve owned has been a Circle Y and they have lasted 10+ yrs. I guess you could say I’m a little biased towards that brand. Not to mention, when you’re spending thousands of dollars on a saddle, you want to get a g ..read more

How I Used a Virtual Horseback Riding Challenge for Motivation to Ride More
The North Carolina Cowgirl

My motivation to ride went out the window for a while. 2018 was the last time I went to a barrel race. Back then, barrel racing was my motivation to ride, that is until it wasn’t. Thankfully, I found out about Warhorse Endurance, a virtual horseback riding challenge open to all riders of every discipline. WHY I LOST MY MOTIVATION TO RIDE If you’ve been a long time follower of the blog, then you know there are two things I love to do…Barrel Race and Trail Ride. For a couple years straight, Rumor and I competed in every barrel race in our NBHA district. My motivation to ride back then and a goal ..read more

Fly Boots That Work
The North Carolina Cowgirl
by NC Cowgirl

It’s that time of year again when you can’t walk outside without the flies swarming all around you. Thankfully, we humans can get away from them and retreat into our houses when we’ve had enough of their pesky ways; but, our poor horses can’t escape them. Fly spray seems to work less and less each year, making it harder to find ways to keep the flies away. In past years, I’ve stayed away from fly boots because I thought they would be hot and not work well. When I’ve seen horses wearing them, they don’t stay in place and keep the lower leg covered. Instead, they fall down and bunch up around th ..read more
