In this blog I’ll write about what I believe are the foundations for confidence. I’ve used the term “foundations” because I think confidence fluctuates depending on our circumstances but a feeling of sureness in oneself, security and purpose can be much more enduring.
I’m not an expert on the subject of confidence but I know what’s worked for myself and I know what’s worked for my clients. My education in psychology, health and counselling also informs much of what I write. Have a read and see what ..read more

“Life really does begin at forty. Up until then, you are just doing research”- Carl Jung
In this blog I’ll detail my own fairly recent experience going through a midlife crisis, explain the possible reasons we tend to have one, outline the importance of voluntarily taking on responsibility as a way through and give some ideas on how you might support yourself in creating a life of fulfilment, purpose and new meaning.

The early stages of our life are incredibly important in determining our identity and in shaping our behaviour in adulthood. Childhood experiences can be powerful and sometimes painful, but that doesn’t mean our identity or behaviour is set in stone. Adulthood is a time where we can look back, reflect, and chose to do something different. In this blog, I’ll explain why I think our childhood has such a strong impact on who we become, how it shapes our behaviour in adulthood, and how you might break free ..read more

Introduction
In today’s busy world there is plenty to keep us distracted. We can check work e-mails on our phones, news is 24/7, and social media is constantly pushing for the next set of eyeballs to read its content. The fact we are more accessible creates extra pressures that wouldn’t have been there two decades ago. This increased demand for our attention can make it hard to “switch off” or take time for ourselves, and this tends to lead to elevated stress levels. In short, we don’t “unplug” enough ..read more

I get asked two questions fairly frequently when a client first gets in touch: At some point they will ask: What is Solution Focused Brief Therapy? And How does it work? These are both reasonable questions to ask given you are investing your hard earned money and want to ensure the type of therapy you undertake is effective and a good fit. I get asked these questions often enough that I decided to write a blog post about it.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy has been around since the 1980’s and has a large ..read more

1. Continuity
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (the therapy I predominantly use) is a questions based approach. The way I do therapy does not change because it’s being done through an online platform. It can be just as effective online as it can be in person.
2. Convenience
Online therapy can be fitted around your daily routine easily, as there is no travel time required. In addition, as the counsellor I can often be more flexible with my days/times as I don’t have to commute.
3. Flexibility

Men’s Internal Struggle in Accessing Therapy
My research was born out of my experience counselling men for a number of years, yet similar statements are echoed today. I would often hear: “I wanted to be able to do it on my own, but in the end I just ..read more

1. Purpose
There needs to be a reason to get up in the morning. This is often tied to work for men, but it doesn’t have to be. If out of work, create a reason to get up in the morning. This might be to keep the house tidy, pursue a hobby, help family or simply look after your wellbeing (e.g. exercise). A hobby where you can learn (e.g. an instrument) can create a sense of mastery.
2. Routine
This is something work tends to create naturally. In therapy, I often notice men’s wellbeing shift when they add ..read more
