The railroad yard at Strates Shows Winter Quarters is busy with activity as crews prepare the famous James E. Strates “Fair Train” for a journey up the Eastern Seaboard. Rail cars that have been dormant for the past several seasons are being mechanically overhauled and restored, including the application of a retro-inspired paint scheme and lettering. The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 15, 2024. For this week, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 493,138 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.4 percent compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week ending June 15 were 222,759 carloads, down 2.5 percent compared with the same week in 2023, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 270,379 containers and trailers, up 8.9 percent compared to 2023. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provided an update on the progress of the South Coast Rail project, including a new milestone reached that brings the project closer to completion. The project, which spans across six stations, Middleborough, East Taunton, Freetown, Fall River Depot, Church Street, and New Bedford, will start running test trains on Monday, June 17, 2024.
