My gawd! I remember working with the VAX-11 and the PDP-11 code when I first got out of the USN! NASA used it to process wind-tunnel data and send it a CELCO printer. Before I left NASA LRC in 1988, we were just beginning to install the MicroVax's and the Silicon Graphics Iris 2500T and 3030s. Has it been that long? KWS-1 Tracing Signal Advice

My KWS-1 generally works well but requires a very high knob setting on Carrier Level (9 /10) to get correct drive for tuning/loading in CW to full output. All resistance/voltage checks closely match the manual.  I have isolated the problem as signal loss to the 6CL6 driver pair grids.  I checked PTO output which is very good.  So, problem is somewhere between the 250kc oscillator and 2nd amplifier (V203).  I tried to follow the signal in CAL emission mode from the osc through each stage with a scope 10x probe (10M/11pF) but it loads down the circuit.  It may be my tech ..read more

Years ago, large computers like the VAX 11/780 which no longer worked were stripped of boards for use as replacement parts for ones still in service, and hte cabinets were often converted to wet bars. Just saying, All is never lost, until it is. pics of one: http://toyvax.glendale.ca.us/~vance/vaxbar.html A friend has an old 6 FT tall GE repeater rack cabinet with locking doors.. It is now a place of repose for those long metal things that make loud noises. It's even faked out with a glowing green panel lamp and a red one that randomly comes on a couple times a minute along with some movemen ..read more
